The Jeepney Modernization Program

refers to a government initiative in the Philippines aimed at modernizing the country's

traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJs). Jeepneys are iconic vehicles in the Philippines,
originally made from U.S. military jeeps left behind after World War II, which were
repurposed and customized for public transportation.

The program, introduced by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in 2017, seeks to

address various issues associated with the traditional jeepneys, including safety,
environmental concerns, and efficiency. The objectives of the Jeepney Modernization
Program include improving passenger comfort, reducing emissions, enhancing road
safety, and promoting a more efficient public transportation system.

Under the program, old and dilapidated jeepneys are phased out and replaced with
newer, safer, and more environmentally friendly models. The new jeepneys are required
to meet certain specifications and standards set by the government, including having
Euro-4 compliant engines, low-floor designs, GPS tracking systems, closed-circuit
television (CCTV) cameras, and automated fare collection systems.

To facilitate the modernization process, the government has provided financial

assistance to operators and drivers through various means, such as low-interest loans,
subsidies, and grants. Some funding has also come from other sources, including
partnerships with private companies and organizations.

However, the Jeepney Modernization Program has faced some challenges and
controversies. Some jeepney operators and drivers have raised concerns about the cost
of acquiring new vehicles and the potential impact on their livelihoods. There have been
protests and calls for more inclusive and sustainable alternatives, taking into account the
needs of the operators and drivers.

Overall, the Jeepney Modernization Program aims to modernize the public

transportation sector in the Philippines, promoting safer, cleaner, and more efficient
modes of transportation while addressing the challenges faced by traditional jeepneys.
