Jeepney phase out

Jeepney is one of the public transportations in the Philippines. A lot of Filipino

commuters are using it for transportation because it is less expensive than the
other public transportation vehicles. Jeepney represents our heritage to foreigners
visiting the land. Last December 2017, the Department of Transportation decided to
phase out all the 15 years old jeepneys as part of the government’s transport
modernization program. Jeepney phase out is not necessary in transport
modernization program because jeepneys haveve been a part of our culture, and
jeepneys are what Filipinos are known for. and Rreplacing it with something modern
will take away one part of our being as Filipinos. Jeepney phase out may cause
joblessness for drivers and higher fares for commuters.

The reason why jeepneys became the dominant mode of transport is because
after World War II, the government did not establish a mass transport system.

Jeepney is the biggest source of carbon dioxide. Iit is also one of the cause
of air pollution because of the smoke coming from it. Despite the disadvantages of
jeepney phase commuters will also benefit in jeepney modernization because the
modern jeepney is safer and comfortable than the old jeepney. The modern
jeepney is provided with GPS navigation system and CCTV cameras to monitor
passengers and the drivers, an Automatic Fare Collection System AFCS, speed
limiters, dashboard cameras, and Wi-Fi. It will also have easier access for PWDs
and senior citizen. It also has a bigger passenger accommodation due to longer
frame. Some units are air conditioned.

If the jeepney phase out/modernization was legalized some livelihood of

drivers will be affected because not all drivers were able to purchase a 1.6 to 1.8
million modern jeepney. The fare will be expensive.
