REINFORCEMENT DETAILING

SLAB
Ø The reinforcement detailing in slabs shall be provided as shown in the figure below.
Ø Cranks in slabs are not permitted due to poor performance in seismic shaking.
Ø Minimum slab thickness shall be 100mm.
Ø Generally, slab thickness shall be calculated as shorter spam/28 or 100 mm, whichever is higher.
Ø The minimum cover to reinforcement shall be not less than 15 mm, nor less than the diameter of bar.

PLANNING ASPECTS
Good Practice Bad Practice
Building Shape
Ø Shape should be regular.
Ø Avoid L, U, Y etc. Shape buildings.
Ø If unavoidable, give separation gap to form
regular shape.

Symmetrical Walls
Ø Provide more-or-less symmetrical walls in both
the directions of the plan.

Vertical Continuity
Ø Walls should be continuous in elevation upto
Foundation

Plan Dimensions
Ø Length to width ratio of the plan should be less
than 4.

Masonry Bond
Ø Flemish bond is preferred as compared to english
or any other bond.

Wall Opening Proportion

Ø Restrict upto 40% of wall surface for openings.
Ø Openings shall be preferably be in mid span, away
from corners.
