Task 6 Sample Answer

Benefits of Organic Food

One of the most frequently asked questions about organic food is how it can benefit us. In fact,
organic food, the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides,
growth regulators and livestock feed additives [6.1], offers many benefits. Read on to find out more.

First of all, a diet of organic food is good for your health. According to Global Journal of Nutrition
published in 2019 [6.2a], organic crops have higher concentrations of antioxidants [6.2b] and therefore
lead to a lower risk of cancer and other diseases [6.2c] and an increase in the intake of nutrients [6.2d].
As a matter of fact, it also reduces your intake of harmful chemicals [6.2e] such as pesticides,
preservatives, and chemical fertilisers [6.2f].

Apart from the health benefits, organic agriculture is environmentally friendly. In terms of energy
consumption, it is energy efficient as it uses significantly less fossil energy [6.3a]. As for water
usage, the farming system reduces water pollution [6.3b] and saves water [6.3c]. At the same time,
growing organic crops increases soil fertility [6.3d].

Not only is organic food beneficial to your health, it also offers some environmental benefits. Act
now; switch to an organic diet!

Task 9 Sample Answer
Subject: Replying to your inquiry about our possible business partnership

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I am writing on behalf of Ms. Marven from Olga Organics in reply to your inquiry about our possible
business partnership in your last email.

We would like to cooperate with you because a survey recently conducted by The Consumer Council
indicates that a significant proportion of citizens are hoping to eat healthily and thus expressing an
interest in trying organic food, despite their lack of knowledge of where to obtain it. Granted that
your food delivery service company is currently rated the highest in the industry, we believe that our
partnership will be a mutually beneficial relationship.

Olga Organics takes all the necessary precautionary procedures to ensure the quality of the food we
produce. In addition to ensuring all substandard products are separated from quality ones, random
sampling inspection is carried out on the latter. All qualified products, which bear all the necessary
food safety labels, are transported at 5°C or below with sufficient space between them to guarantee
that they shall be enjoyed at the best appearance and condition.

In accordance with our delivery fee table, the most economical way for us to send you a delivery is
ordering a load of 500kg or above using our express speed delivery, which costs $15 per delivery. In
the case of a lighter load, our rapid express speed delivery at $25 per run should prove an agreeable
alternative.

Should you have further inquiry, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,
Hank Williams

Task 10: Appropriacy = 2 marks

Marks Appropriacy
2 ⚫ Register, tone and style generally appropriate to text through manipulation of parts of the Data File

1 ⚫ Register, tone and style reasonably appropriate to text through some manipulation of parts of the
Data File and through own language.
⚫ The tone may be inconsistent.
0 Little or no evidence of an ability to manipulate register, tone or style in order to produce an appropriate
text.

Key appropriacy areas include (but are not limited to):

⚫ This is a letter to the editor of a newspaper.
⚫ It intends to publicly confront the accusations of a journalist against the writer’s company so as to preserve
company image. Therefore, candidates should not write like they are writing directly to the concerned journalist.
⚫ The tone must not put the company at a disadvantageous position. Phrases such as “we admit…” are thus
considered inappropriate.
⚫ A closing statement which encourages readers to continue to support Olga Organics or learn more about organic
food is appropriate.
Task 10 Sample Answer
Dear Editor,

Despite the fact that organic eating has been gaining in popularity, misconceptions about this trend and
food production companies in the industry, we Olga Organics included, are still common in society.
Hence, this letter aims to provide facts to help citizens gain a better understanding.

Certain environmental benefits notwithstanding, organic farming could lead to habitat destruction and
decline in biodiversity resulting from the extra land required. However, as one of the leaders in the
industry, Olga Organics has taken measures in alleviating the impact. Land sharing and separation,
techniques which can counter the negative effect, are practised in all of our farms.

With society’s awareness of animal welfare increasing, some people have come to equate organic food
with animals on organic farms being naturally-fed, grass-fed, roaming free and displaying normal
behaviour, but unfortunately that is not the truth. By law, feeding which does not contain growth
hormones and antibiotics can be classified as organic, and the way farm animals are killed is not
governed. In this regard, consumers can rest assured that Olga Organics not only has imposed
free-range systems in all farms, but also ensures that the animals do not suffer unnecessary pain.

The most controversial issue is whether organic food is more nutritional than conventional food. As a
matter of fact, government laboratory results have shown that there is no significant difference in
nutritional value between them, but what deserves attention is that organic vegetables have been
proven to have lower pesticide remaining according to the same report. Furthermore, research has
shown that school children having organic dairy products supplied by Olga Organics are found to be less
likely to have eczema.

While Olga Organics does benefit from the trend of organic food, we hold our social responsibility in a
high regard. Out of the three biggest organic food companies, the spending of Olga Organics on
consumer education has been increasing in the past four years and we are the only company increasing
such spending. It is our firm belief that by broadening consumers’ knowledge, they will make the
correct choices of organic eating and shopping from us, allowing us to thrive ethically as they enjoy high
quality food produced by our company.

Olga Organics takes the wellbeing of all consumers seriously and will continue to safeguard their health
and interests.

Yours faithfully,
Hank Williams
