Present Progressive—Spelling Rules

1. Most verbs:

work + ing working


enjoy + ingenjoying
eat + ingeating

2. Verbs ending with e:


smile + ingsmiling
have + ing  having

3. One syllable verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC)


sit + t + ing sitting
clap +p + ing  clapping

Two syllables with the accent on the last syllable

forgétforgetting

Never double k, x, or y!

Add –ing to the verbs below. Double the consonant or cross out e (e) if necessary.
