INTRODUCTION:

In English grammar, verbs are often used in a way that it indicates or denotes the time when an
event occurred. These verbs that take up different forms to indicate the time of an action,
event or condition by changing its form are called as tenses. By learning the purpose of using
the appropriate form of the verb in narrating an experience, we can appropriately relay our
messages either through direct or indirect speech.

In this module, you will learn how to

-use the past and past perfect tenses correctly in varied contexts
-use direct and indirect or reported speech appropriately in varied contexts.

I. FOCUS LESSON

Let’s begin our journey with this simple activity.

Read the paragraph below and take note of the italicized words. Then answer the process
questions below.

Despite the steady drizzle, I decided to go out and take a


walk. I wandered aimlessly through the village, going to spots
that not many people knew. When I reached the place that
overlooked the city, I saw an old friend. We talked about many
things, from looking for a job to going abroad. The light
drizzle turned into heavy rain, so my friend and I said our
goodbyes. I rushed home feeling very happy.

Processed Questions:
1. Look at the italicized word/s in the paragraph. What do they imply?
2. When did the action happen?
3. What forms of the verb were used?

Linking Statement:

The words decided, wandered, reached, talked are in the past tense and indicate a
completed action. Do you know how the past tense of the verb form? This is the lesson that

Forming the Simple Past Tense of Irregular Verbs


If it's an irregular verb, the simple past tense is formed in all sorts of
different ways. Here are some examples:

Linking Statement :
Answer for question number 3 showed that two events occurred in the past. It expresses
the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. This tell something about
Past Perfect Tense which is the lesson that we are going to discuss today.

B. GUIDED INSTRUCTION
Past Perfect Tense
- Is used when you are telling about a completed action before something in the past. Past
perfect tense is formed by using the word “ had” + ( past participle).
- Is used to describe one action that happened before another action in the past.

Examples :

What makes the two sentences different ?

Linking Statement::
- You noticed that in sentence 1, actual words are said by the
speaker while in sentence 2 the actual words said by the speaker are not repeated.
However its meaning remain the same. When a sentence carries the actual words
of a speaker, it is written in quotation mark. We call this speech as direct speech.
When the speech is reported without the actual words but its full meaning intact,
we say that it is an indirect speech.

B. GUIDED INSTRUCTION
A. Direct/quoted Speech
- When a sentence carries the actual words of a speaker
- Involves quoting the exact words uttered by the person, within inverted commas or
quotation marks.
Examples:
1. Raul said, “I am happy.”
2. Anne said, “I will be coming home tonight.”

B. Indirect/reported Speech
- When the speech is reported without the actual words but its full meaning intact.
- It does not have to be within quotes or reported word-to-word. In fact, unless one
is relaying the exact words spoken, one should never use quotation.
Examples:
1. Raul said that he was happy.
2. She said that she would be coming home that night.

Past tense in the indirect speech is used in
changing the direct speech in the simple
