Diffusion refers to the net passive movement of atoms, ions or molecules across a specific concentration

gradient. A solute will move from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration across a
concentration gradient (Fick’s law). Spontaneously, material substances result a random motion due to its
molecular level to create uniformity. By that, the goal of diffusion is to create state of equilibrium in the
concentration materials environment.

Diffusion helps the cells internal environment maintain its property by regulation. By regulating it,
chemical reaction occurs to resist deformation and experience minimal volume change. It is normally
sufficient to maintain the cells materials to sustain its life.

Diffusivity is predetermined by temperature, environment’s viscosity of the fluid and the size of the
diffusing particle. The radius of the solute area diffused is inversely proportional to its speed of
diffusion. By doing this experiment and examining it, we can determine which diffused fastest and
farther and how does molecular weight affects the rate of diffusivity of a molecule from 2 different
stains (Congo red and Methylene Blue).
