PGT25 POWER TURBINES – MINERAL OIL LEAKAGE INSPECTION

1. Abstract
The purposes of this Service Bulletin are to
inform Customers of a new sealing solution
available to prevent potential power turbine
leakage and also to provide instructions to
verify the correct installation of the existing
sealing system placed between base plate
and rotor support in order to determine if it
is involved in power turbine leakage.

2. Serviceable Units
All GE Oil & Gas PGT25 gas turbines.

3. Description
The PGT25 power turbine bearings are fed
by mineral oil supplied by a distributor
installed on the rotor support. The oil
discharge occurs by a dedicated hole of the
baseplate (see Figure 1).

SERVICE BULLETIN
NIC 08.26 Rev. 00

The current sealing system between the

rotor support and the baseplate uses a
Nitrile Bruma N-rubber (NBR) O-Ring, which
is contained in a groove machined in the
baseplate (see Figure 3).

Oil leaks have been noted during ordinary

scheduled inspections on some PGT25 units.
These leaks have been detected between
rotor support and baseplate (see Figure 1
for cross section and Figure 2 for side view)).
No consequent damages or occurrence of
fire within the package has been
encountered.
During the investigation of the leaks,
Figure 3
mineral oil was found in the rear end of the
baseplate. To determine if this has any
relationship to the leaks experienced at
some PGT25 sites, it is necessary to perform
the inspections described in Paragraph 4.

4. Inspection and Test

For each PGT25 serviceable unit, it is
required that a visual inspection of the
mating surface between rotor support and
baseplate be performed at the first unit
shut down, in order to detect if any oil
leakage has occurred.

If oil leakage is found in the rear of the

baseplate, the procedure described in
APPENDIX #1 must be followed.

Even if the unit has not experienced any

leakage, each time a LEVEL 1 INSPECTION
is performed, the mating surface between
rotor support and baseplate must be
checked as specified in APPENDIX #1.

The inspection data should be recorded in

the COMPLIANCE RECORD FORM of
APPENDIX #2 and sent by fax to the address
specified in the form.

5. Modification
The investigation of the oil leaks identified
the O-Ring material as the critical element
in the sealing system, so the NBR has been
replaced by Flourocarbon rubben (FKM) in
the current sealing system design.
The FKM material retains the proper elastic
and mechanical gasket characteristics and
has increased ability to withstand higher
operating temperatures (90°C higher).

GE Oil & Gas applied the FKM O-Ring

material as standard in the sealing system
since January, 2008.

Application of the modification requires the

replacement of the existing O-Ring in NBR
material with the improved FKM O-Ring (for
GE Oil & Gas part number see Table 1).

6. Recommendations
GE Oil & Gas recommends visual inspection
at the next shutdown of all PGT25
serviceable units.

The visual inspection must be included in

the LEVEL 1 INSPECTION cycle and
performed at each scheduled maintenance
even until the improved FKM O-Ring is
installed.

In units with mineral oil leaks, it is required

to replace the existing O-Ring with the FKM
O-Ring following the instructions described
in APPENDIX #1: the Compliance Category
has to be intended as CAMPAIGN (see
Paragraph 7 for details of Timing Code).

leakage in the rear of the baseplate, GE Oil &

APPENDIX #1
PGT25 ROTOR SUPPORT - BASEPLATE GAP
MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

In case of oil leakage occurs in the rear side of the baseplate, Customer site maintenance
personnel should apply the following procedure:

a. Measure clearances all around the mating surface between rotor support and baseplate
using a feeler gauge. During the measurement, please fill the COMPLIANCE RECORD FORM
FOR PGT25 ROTOR SUPPORT – BASEPLATE GAP MEASUREMENTS of Appendix #2

b. As short term solution, apply joint silicone (as Arexons, Motorsil D or equivalent) on the
external surface of rotor support and baseplate, after having accurately cleaned the external
surfaces from oil/grease

c. Continue to monitor the area at each next scheduled inspection up to Major Overhaul

d. At the next scheduled Major Inspection or appropriate outage, replace the original O-Ring
with the new design, following the implementation instructions described in Paragraph 8.
