In their article “Getting heavier, younger: trajectories of obesity over the life course”, Lee et al.,
(2010) explore the trends in obesity among adults and children in the USA by conducting age,
period and cohort analysis for their study. The study was applied on adults only by distributing
surveys; the aim of this study was to discover the trajectories of obesity over the life course of
the Americans. In other words, studying if obesity increased with age, or depended on gender
and race. Furthermore, it studied if the young adults experienced obesity more than the previous
generations and what were the consequences of them. In terms of the outcomes of the study, it
discussed that individuals who are born recently are actually more prone to obesity especially
among women and black cohorts. Thus, the US population’s rate of obesity is increasing and is
more likely to have higher rates of type 2 diabetes and mortality in the future.
SUMMARY OF ARTICLE 2
In their Article “Relationship Between Obesity and Diabetes in a US Adult Population: Findings
from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999–2006”, Wang et al., (2010)
study the link between obesity and diabetes among the US adults. The study was conducted by
examining the samples’ insulin level, fasting glucose with their weights where BMI was used to
classify if the individual was obese, normal weight or over weight. The study resulted in a
positive relationship and link between obesity and type 2 diabetes. In other words, the number of
individuals having type 2 diabetes are most likely to be overweight or obese, where they also
have a poor glycemic control. Hence, it is suggested for obese adults with diabetes to consider
losing weight in order to prevent the negative effect of diabetes on their health care and immune
system.
