Three things that I learned from the story, “The Turtle and the Rabbit, the New Version”.

For ages, I have heard the tale of the “Rabbit and the Turtle” where they both challenge each other
for a race. The turtle wins in the end because it is ‘slow and steady’. I thought it ended there, but it
was only the first out of four versions of the story.

In the second version of the story, the rabbit does some introspection, learns from his mistakes, and
emerges to be a winner. In this version, I have learned that giving up is not an option. To succeed
in life, I must think twice about giving up because the power only lies within my mindset, and
shifting the key to keeping up motivation is the only thing I need when things get tough.

In the third version, the turtle focuses on its core competency and wins the race again because this
time they both decided to take a different route that involved crossing a river. The turtle did win the
game due to its core competency as it could swim across the river. From this version, I learned that
focusing on my strengths is an important step towards creating a more enjoyable and
successful life, and conversely, focusing on my weakness will only stop me from reaching my
goals.

In the final version of the story, the turtle and the rabbit team up, identify each other’s core
competencies and despite the changes in the playing field, they both emerge, winners, have a sense
of satisfaction, and a broad smile on their faces. In this version, I can relate it to our workplace.
We’re 10 in our department each having individual expertise. When discussing a particular project,
each one is being asked to give her/his insight. When an employee gives a better grasp of the
project, he/she with the relevant core competency takes leadership, and steer things forward. Thus,
like in our workplace, the final story tells me that combining resources and teamwork will always
defeat individual performers and help achieve significant results.
