Harmful effects of tobacco

In Asia and Africa there are no regulations on the sale of cigarettes even to minors. To sell more,
and make it easier for everyone to buy and smoke cigarettes, kiosks and shops sell even a single
cigarette to those smokers who do not want to purchase a packet for any reason. Besides the
money that cigarette companies spend on advertising, they also spend large amounts in
sponsorships, coupons, discounts and many more things to encourage smoking. Besides the
stimulation people get by smoking, most youngsters also smoke to appear “cool” among their
peers. Some youngsters also believe that smoking gives them an air of maturity which impresses
the opposite sex.

Advertising on television has maintained its popularity, and now companies spend millions of
dollars for promoting their products via the Internet by making and maintaining websites and
other form of advertising on the Net. Although the Federal Government has banned cigarette on
the electronic media, the regulations do not currently cover the Internet. Advertising companies
are well aware of the influence that well planned and aptly projected images can have over the
minds of people, especially the youth. Projected images of race car drivers, sports and movie
starts who endorse certain brands of cigarettes and who are shown smoking cigarettes impresses
people and they like to emulate their heroes.

This leads them to smoke the brand(s) that these celebrities are sponsoring and they start
patronizing that brand, which is exactly what the tobacco companies want because this sells their
products. Everyone is familiar with the harmful effects of tobacco. Many lethal diseases like lung
cancer, heart diseases etc are all attributed to smoking. Besides active smokers, smoking also
harms passive smokers are exposed to cigarette smoke who face the same hazards as smokers.
The use of tobacco products is also associated with cancer of the mouth, and people who start
using tobacco products, especially cigarettes have a greater chance of getting asthma besides a
host of other ailments.

In addition to the various health aspects connected with smoking, in third world countries the
use of tobacco product can sometimes be termed a waste of money. In the west a few cents is
only that, spare change but in many countries that might constitute around 25 to 50% of a
person’s daily earnings which could be spend on much better things like food that the entire
household can eat instead of one person blowing up that hard earned money in smoke
