9 occurrences are identified: four times in the Majjhimanikāya Aṭṭhakathā (M-a 4.343), once in
Saṃyuttanikāya Aṭṭhakathā, once in the Theragātha Aṭṭhakathā, twice in the Majjhimanikāya
ṭīkā, and once in the Visuddhimagga ṭīkā.
In M-a (4.343), it is discussed as one of the topics [or qualities of advanced practitioners]
discussed by mahāmoggallāna…to the preachers of dhamma, namely abhidhamma.
[Āyasmā mahāmoggallāno samādhipāramiyā matthakaṃ patto, sukhumaṃ pana cittantaraṃ
khandhantaraṃ dhātvantaraṃ āyatanantaraṃ jhānokkantikaṃ ārammaṇokkantikaṃ
aṅgavavatthānaṃ ārammaṇavavatthānaṃ aṅgasaṅkanti ārammaṇasaṅkanti ekatovaḍḍhanaṃ
ubhatovaḍḍhananti ābhidhammikadhammakathikasseva pākaṭaṃ.]
In M-a (5.454) and in S-a (13.662), it refers to the various factors experienced by a practitioner
in different jhānas;
[Paṭhamaṃ jhānanti idha kiṃ pucchati? Nirodhaṃ samāpajjanakena bhikkhunā
aṅgavavatthānaṃ koṭṭhāsaparicchedo nāma jānitabbo, idaṃ jhānaṃ pañcaṅgikaṃ caturaṅgikaṃ
tivaṅgikaṃ duvaṅgikanti aṅgavavatthānaṃ koṭṭhāsaparicchedaṃ pucchissāmīti pucchati.]
[Jhānasaṃyuttassa paṭhame samādhikusaloti paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ pañcaṅgikaṃ dutiyaṃ
tivaṅgikanti evaṃ aṅgavavatthānakusalo. Na samādhismiṃ samāpattikusaloti cittaṃ hāsetvā
kallaṃ katvā jhānaṃ samāpajjituṃ na sakkoti. Iminā nayena sesapadānipi veditabbāni.]
The Theragātha-a (10.566) discusses it as a type of practice that people are skilled in.
[Eko cettha samādhilakkhaṇe cheko, eko vipassanālakkhaṇe, eko samādhigāḷho, eko
vipassanāgāḷho eko aṅgasaṃkhitte cheko, eko ārammaṇasaṃkhitte, eko aṅgavavatthāne, eko
ārammaṇavavatthāneti vaṇṇenti.]
In the ṭīkā to the Majjhimanikāya (4.343), it is defined as referring to the factors of the first jhāna
until the sphere of neither perception nor non perception.
[‘‘Paṭhamajjhānaṃ pañcaṅgika’’ntiādinā yāva nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ duvaṅgikanti
jhānaṅgamattasseva vavatthāpanaṃ aṅgavavatthānaṃ.]
