The alchemist Johann Friedrich Bottger
was initially employed by Augustus the Strong, king
of Poland and elector of Saxony, in the hope
that he would be able to make gold.
Bottger set to work and, in about 1 707, succeeded
instead in producing a fine red stoneware,
which he called jasper after the semiprecious stone.
Since this stoneware was fairly hard, it could be
cut and engraved, and t?iarks still visible on the body
of this teapot, which dates from c.l~15, indicate
that it was turned on a lathe.

Between 1 720 and 1 727, hard-paste porcelain
was produced at the Vezzi factory in Venice using
kaolin (china clay) supplied directly from the Meissen
clay pits in a cooperative venture with one of the
chemists working at Meissen. When this support
ended, Vezzi had to close. Northern Italy was
under strong German and Austrian influence during
this period, which explains such links.

This unmarked creamware teapot, made
c.1770, can be accurately attributed to Josiah
Wedgwood on the basis of its shape. Although
Wedgwood did not invent creamware, he popularized
it, and as a result of his commission for a
creamware tea service for Queen Charlotte, it became
themost fashionable of wares. Previously only
porcelain or silver had been regarded as suitable
