Infinitive Phrases (Exercises)

Exercise 1: Say what function the infinitive phrase fulfils in each of the following sentences.

1. Harry’s dream is to spend the year traveling in Europe.


2. To save enough money for the trip is not easy.
3. He plans to fly to London first.
4. He will use the train under the English Channel to get to Paris.
5. His goal is to see all the art museums in London and Paris.
6. To be in the Alps during the winter would be ideal.
7. He would stay there a few weeks to go skiing.
8. I approve of Harry’s plan to take a train to travel from Florence to Rome.

Exercise 2: Convert the infinitive phrases in each of these sentences into a relative clause.

1. The next train to arrive is from Edinburgh.


2. The first man to fly non-stop across the Atlantic was John Alcock.
3. Was Cortes the first European ever to see the Pacific Ocean?
4. The best man to see for your eye trouble is the Professor of Ophthalmology.
5. The man for John to speak to first is the Director of the Museum.
6. The cheapest place to eat at is the cafeteria.
7. Will you buy me a magazine to read on the journey?
8. The last problem to be considered at our next meeting is how to invest the money.

Exercise 3: Underline the infinitives in the sentences below then give their functions.

1. Clay goes to his grandmother’s house to eat homemade sweets.
