Big Cats

Spectrum Readers:

ROAR! Big Cats, is a non-fiction text for beginning Level 1 readers. It is a


“Spectrum Readers” text, which is a fun standards-based reading program that
provides high-interest topics using simple sentences and vocabulary. The text is
filled with repetitive phrases, to provide lots of practice with new words. Pictures of
big cats help students learn the unfamiliar words related to the specific big cat,
and to comprehend what he/she is reading.

The book provides tips for parents on how they can help their child become
successful readers, along with comprehension questions at the end of the book for
students to build upon their reading skills.
Summary:

ROAR! Big Cats, exposes beginning readers to a variety of big cats. These
cats include bobcat, cougar, lynx, ocelot, leopard, clouded leopard, snow
leopard, black panther, jaguar, bengal tiger, siberian tiger, african lion, and
cheetah.

Pictures, structured repetitive sentences and


vocabulary, all assist in helping beginning readers
build fluency skills and comprehension skills.
Instructional Strategies:
Graphic Organizer
Students are put into groups of 3-4, and are assigned a specific big cat. They will
be given additional resources on the specific big cat, and will complete a graphic
organizer.
Presentation:
Following the completion of the graphic organizer, students will each be placed in
a different group, to share the information they found on their specific big cat.
Students will fill out another worksheet while listening to their classmates present,
writing down the information they learn about the other big cats.
Differentiation

For students with disabilities, they may receive an audio of the book.
Students can receive independent assistance in filling out the graphic
organizer and other worksheets, using visuals to assist them.
