This 4th quarter will be very exciting and fun for everyone
because before this quarter ends you will be staging your
original theater performance, but before that you must first be
fully aware of the Philippine Theater and Performing Groups
which will be our focus today, and then the next topic will be
the Roles in a Stage Production, and so on. So you will be a
director, an actor, videographer, etc. This are the topics that
will help you in your final performance. Okay? Is everyone

PETA (PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL THEATER
ASSOCIATION)

Please take note of the name of the theater groups and what
are the types of play they produce, their usual theme or subject
because it’s our focus and not so much with the year it was
founded and its founder okay?
Types of Production: Classical works, Philippine myths and
legends, commentaries on current social and political issues.
Classical - (typically of a form of art) regarded as representing
an exemplary standard; traditional and long-established in
form or style.
Myth-a traditional story, especially one concerning the early
history of a people or explaining some natural or social
phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or
events.
Legend-a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as
historical but unauthenticated.
Commentary - an expression of opinions or offering of
explanations explanations about an event or situation.

 Haring Lear (2012)
"King Lear" which is considered by many as
Shakespeare’s best work, is translated by National
Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera. A story of
a king whose rash judgment, firm faith in filial piety,
violence and blindness caused so much destruction
and finally his own undoing.
 Pamana (2013)
“Pamana” may have fulfilled its primary aim of
celebrating the legacy of Ninoy and Cory Aquino.
But by being more than just a tribute, it also
dramatically reminds us that there are still a lot of
work to be done for Filipinos to be truly united.
"Pamana" tells the story of a typical low middle-class
Filipino family. Lola Azon is a retired Metro Aide
street sweeper during the Martial Law time and a big
admirer of her namesake, Pres. Corazon Aquino. Her
son Edgar has grown disillusioned with how the
government went after the EDSA Revolution, so he
decided to be an OFW, working in Dubai, then
Switzerland. Azon's grand-daughter/Edgar's daughter
is Trina, who has to make a decision whether she will
join her dad abroad or stay put in the country she is
just discovering to love.
REPERTORY PHILIPPINES
Reportory - the performance of various plays, operas, or
ballets by a company at regular short intervals. Ex. "a
repertory actor"; repertory theaters regarded collectively.

Types of Production: Original and adapted plays and musical
productions, English-language plays.
Let us also note that the Repertory Phil. Is the group where
Lea Salonga, a multi-awarded theater actress and singer,
international stage superstar began her career as a child in the
lead role of Kim in Miss Saigon – putting the Philippines on
the world map in terms of theater talent.
Repertory Phil. Is the company that produced a number of
actors and actresses who have gone on to become stars on the
international stage.
Major Productions:
 Les Miserables (1993)
Based on the classic novel, Les Misérables, by Victor
Hugo, and the classic Broadway stage show of the
same name, Les Misérables is the story of Jean
Valjean, a prisoner who breaks parole, and the police
inspector, Javert, who tries to hunt him down for
breaking parole. Valjean tries to help a poor factory
 worker, Fantine, by saving her child, Cosette, from
innkeepers who are holding her captive as a slave.
Marius, a war veteran during the battles of post-
French Revolution, falls for Cosette, but their lives
change forever when the war turns more gruesome
than expected.
 A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (2009)
Set in pre-war Manila, it tells of two spinster sisters
who continue to reside in their ancestral home with
their aging artist father, in spite of conflicts that arise
amongst family members to abandon the old house.
The complexities of human frailties are brought to
light as characters interact with one another in a
tightly woven interplay of emotions.
 Little Women (2010)
For its traditional December holiday production,
Repertory Philippines is staging the family musical
Little Women. Based on the novel by American
author Louisa May Alcott, this production tells the
heartwarming story of the March family: how they
overcome challenges and gain love and unity in the
process.
"Audiences will see how the March sisters depend on
each other as a family and how they cope as their
father is away serving the American Civil War," she
says. "They're a fun bunch: brash aspiring writer Jo,
romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted
Beth. Audiences will surely be able to relate to these
four little women."
 Alice in Wonderland (2013)
Alice sits on a riverbank on a warm summer day,
drowsily reading over her sister’s shoulder, when she
catches sight of a White Rabbit in a waistcoat
running by her. The White Rabbit pulls out a pocket
watch, exclaims that he is late, and pops down a
rabbit hole. Alice follows the White Rabbit down the
hole and comes upon a great hallway lined with
doors. She finds a small door that she opens using a
key she discovers on a nearby table. Through the
door, she sees a beautiful garden, and Alice begins to
cry when she realizes she cannot fit through the door.
She finds a bottle marked “DRINK ME” and downs
the contents. She shrinks down to the right size to
enter the door but cannot enter since she has left the
key on the tabletop above her head. Alice discovers a
cake marked “EAT ME” which causes her to grow to
an inordinately large height. Still unable to enter the
garden, Alice begins to cry again, and her giant tears
form a pool at her feet. As she cries, Alice shrinks
and falls into the pool of tears. The pool of tears
becomes a sea, and as she treads water she meets a
Mouse. The Mouse accompanies Alice to shore,
where a number of animals stand gathered on a bank.
After a “Caucus Race,” Alice scares the animals
away with tales of her cat, Dinah, and finds herself
alone again.
Alice meets the White Rabbit again, who mistakes
her for a servant and sends her off to fetch his things.
While in the White Rabbit’s house, Alice drinks an
unmarked bottle of liquid and grows to the size of the
room. The White Rabbit returns to his house, fuming
at the now-giant Alice, but she swats him and his
servants away with her giant hand. The animals
outside try to get her out of the house by throwing
rocks at her, which inexplicably transform into cakes
when they land in the house. Alice eats one of the
cakes, which causes her to shrink to a small size. She
wanders off into the forest, where she meets a
Caterpillar sitting on a mushroom and smoking a
hookah (i.e., a water pipe). The Caterpillar and Alice
get into an argument, but before the Caterpillar
crawls away in disgust, he tells Alice that different
parts of the mushroom will make her grow or shrink.
Alice tastes a part of the mushroom, and her neck
stretches above the trees. A pigeon sees her and
attacks, deeming her a serpent hungry for pigeon
eggs.

Alice eats another part of the mushroom and shrinks
down to a normal height. She wanders until she
comes across the house of the Duchess. She enters
and finds the Duchess, who is nursing a squealing
baby, as well as a grinning Cheshire Cat, and a Cook
who tosses massive amounts of pepper into a
cauldron of soup. The Duchess behaves rudely to
Alice and then departs to prepare for a croquet game
with the Queen. As she leaves, the Duchess hands
Alice the baby, which Alice discovers is a pig. Alice
lets the pig go and reenters the forest, where she
meets the Cheshire Cat again. The Cheshire Cat
explains to Alice that everyone in Wonderland is
mad, including Alice herself. The Cheshire Cat gives
directions to the March Hare’s house and fades away
to nothing but a floating grin.
Alice travels to the March Hare’s house to find the
March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and the Dormouse
having tea together. Treated rudely by all three, Alice
stands by the tea party, uninvited. She learns that they
have wronged Time and are trapped in perpetual tea-
time. After a final discourtesy, Alice leaves and
journeys through the forest. She finds a tree with a
door in its side, and travels through it to find herself
back in the great hall. She takes the key and uses the
mushroom to shrink down and enter the garden.
After saving several gardeners from the temper of the
Queen of Hearts, Alice joins the Queen in a strange
game of croquet. The croquet ground is hilly, the
 mallets and balls are live flamingos and hedgehogs,
and the Queen tears about, frantically calling for the
other player’s executions. Amidst this madness, Alice
bumps into the Cheshire Cat again, who asks her how
she is doing. The King of Hearts interrupts their
conversation and attempts to bully the Cheshire Cat,
who impudently dismisses the King. The King takes
offense and arranges for the Cheshire Cat’s
execution, but since the Cheshire Cat is now only a
head floating in midair, no one can agree on how to
behead it.
The Duchess approaches Alice and attempts to
befriend her, but the Duchess makes Alice feel
uneasy. The Queen of Hearts chases the Duchess off
and tells Alice that she must visit the Mock Turtle to
hear his story. The Queen of Hearts sends Alice with
the Gryphon as her escort to meet the Mock Turtle.
Alice shares her strange experiences with the Mock
Turtle and the Gryphon, who listen sympathetically
and comment on the strangeness of her adventures.
After listening to the Mock Turtle’s story, they hear
an announcement that a trial is about to begin, and
the Gryphon brings Alice back to the croquet ground.
The Knave of Hearts stands trial for stealing the
Queen’s tarts. The King of Hearts leads the
proceedings, and various witnesses approach the
stand to give evidence. The Mad Hatter and the Cook
both give their testimony, but none of it makes any
sense. The White Rabbit, acting as a herald, calls
Alice to the witness stand. The King goes nowhere
with his line of questioning, but takes encouragement
when the White Rabbit provides new evidence in the
form of a letter written by the Knave. The letter turns
out to be a poem, which the King interprets as an
admission of guilt on the part of the Knave. Alice
believes the note to be nonsense and protests the
King’s interpretation. The Queen becomes furious
with Alice and orders her beheading, but Alice grows
to a huge size and knocks over the Queen’s army of
playing cards.
All of a sudden, Alice finds herself awake on her
sister’s lap, back at the riverbank. She tells her sister
about her dream and goes inside for tea as her sister
ponders Alice’s adventures.
 The Producers (2013)
The story of The Producers pays homage to the
Broadway hits of the past. Max Bialystock, a down
and out Broadway producer meets Leopold Bloom,
an accountant. Together they scheme to get rich by
overselling interest in a Broadway flop.
TANGHALANG PILIPINO
Founded: 1987
Founder: Cultural Center of the Philippines
Types of Production: Classical works, Philippine myths and
legends, commentaries on current social and political issues.
Tanghalang Pilipino is the same with PETA in terms of the
kind of plays they produce.
Major Productions:
 Himala (2004)
Himala is the story of Elsa, a barrio lass whose
supposed visions of the Virgin Mary change her life,
turning her into an overnight sensation and causing
mass hysteria in a poor, isolated northern Philippine
village suffering from a drought. The film is centred
on the issues of religious faith and faithlessness,
morality, and truth.
 Ibalong (2012)
"Ibalong" tells the story of a league of warriors, led
by Handyong, who arrive in Bicol (formerly Ibalon),
where these men face vicious attacks from beasts and
monsters -- a cyclops, winged sharks, wild carabaos,
and snakes.
 Noli (2011)
In commemoration of its 25 years, Tanghalang
Pilipino brings to life the musical version of Noli Me
Tangere, which also pays tribute to Jose Rizal—who
wrote the novel.
Ang nobelang Noli Me Tangere or Huwag Mo Akong
Salingin sa tagalog ay isinulat ni Dr. Jose Rizal. Ito
ay inilimbag noong 1887 sa Germany. Tinalakay sa
nobela ang mga panglalapastangan ng mga Kastilang
Prayle pati na rin ang mga pang-aapi ng mga nanakop
na mga dayuhan.
Umikot ang nobela sa buhay ni Crisostomo Ibarra,
isang binatang nag-aral ng pitong taon sa Europa.
Siya ay mula sa isang prominenteng angkan sa San
Diego. Nang siya ay umuwi sa Pilipinas, naghandog
ng isang piging ang tanyag na si Kapitan Tiago.
Kasamang inimbitahan sa salu-salo ang mga
Pransiskanong prayle na sila Padre Salvi at Padre
Damaso.
Matapos ang piging, dinalaw ng magiting na binata
ang kanyang kasintahang si Maria Clara, na anak-
anakan naman ng kapita-pitagang si Kapitan Tiago.
Sinariwa nilang dalawa ang kanilang pagmamahalan
sa pamamagitan ng pagbabasa ng mga liham na
ipinadala nila sa isa’t-isa noong namamalagi pa si
Ibarra sa Europa.
Habang papauwi sa kanyang tahanan,
nakapagkwentuhan si Ibarra at ang matalik na
kaibigan ng kanilang pamilya na si Tinyente
 Gueverra. Ibinahagi ni tinyente ang malagim na
sinapit ng kanyang ama sa kamay ni Padre Damaso.
Bagamat hindi maganda ang pagiging trato ng prayle
kay Don Rafael, pinili na lamang niya na abutin ang
kanyang pangarap na makapagpatayo ng paaralan sa
San Diego.
Sa kasamaang palad, naging madilim ang
kinabukasan ni Ibarra matapos siyang itakwil ng
simbahan at mapagbintangan na nag-organisa ng
rebelyon.
Tinugis siya ng gwardya sibil, ngunit nailigtas ni
Elias, isang rebelde na tumutuligsa sa mga pang-aapi
ng mga dayuhan. Tinangka nilang tumakas palabas
ng lawa ng Bay, ngunit naabutan sila ng mga
gwardya sibil.
Upang ilagaw ang mga tumutugis, tumaboy si Elias
sa bangka. Pinagbabaril siya hanggang sa mapuno ng

One of the most significant themes seen in C. S.
Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is
the theme of Christianity. Various aspects of
characters and events in the novel reflect biblical
ideas from Christianity.
 N.O.A.H (2009)
-tale of a single man’s faith and obedience against
seemingly insurmountable odds
-God’s messages of love and hope. And if ever there
is a time we need hope, it is now and, if there ever
were a story that best promises that hope, it is
N.O.A.H.”
 The Bluebird of Happiness (2013)
two poor, unhappy children Mytyl and Tyltyl express
their dismay about Christmas. In search of a better
life, the two embark on a magical journey searching
for the mythical creature known as the bluebird of
happiness. Together with their dog, cat and "Light" (a
candle in human form), the two kids visit various
places: "The Land of Memory," where the children
meet their long dead grandparents, "The Palace of the
Night," "The Forest," "The Land of Luxury," "The
Land of the Future" and "The Graveyard." Mytyl and
Tyltyl end up in the same place where they started
their journey--their own home.

“controversial” and profound topics.
Thought-provoking-stimulating careful consideration or

knowledge or insight.
Major Productions:
 Aspects of Love (2006)
The piece focuses on the romantic entanglements of
actress Rose Vibert, her admiring fan Alex
Dillingham, his underage cousin Jenny, his uncle
George, and George's mistress, sculptor Giulietta
Trapani, over a period of 17 years. The "aspects" of
the title refers to the many forms that love takes in
the show: love between couples, both as romantic
infatuation and as married people; children and their
parents; and hints of same-sex attraction (Giulietta
and Rose).
 The Male Voice (2009)
The concept of “TMV” was born in 2003, when Eve
Ensler decided to include men in her annual “VDay”
benefit shows – raising the question of addressing the
problem of violence against women by involving
men in the understanding and solution process. The
series of workshops and interviews with a diverse
group of men that followed at the New Voice studio
gave birth to a short but highly acclaimed segment of
the “VDay” show at the AFP Theater that year – a
piece that brought most of the house to tears.
This month, six years later, New Voice Company
explores the theme further by bringing onstage
powerful, revealing, moving, and funny stories of
men from all walks of life: Artists, students, priests,
gay and straight men, illegal Filipino workers abroad,
macho dancers, businessmen, male prostitutes,
military men, abused children, doctors, fathers and
brothers. The stories give insight into their worlds,
how violence was rooted in many of their lives, and
how they are ultimately connected to the violence
women and girls experience.
 Pieces include "My Mother Is A Zombie" and
"Dessert, anyone?" - about sons and their
relationships with their mothers. "The Lord's Servants
Speak Up" - about the rare and insightful perspectives
of a priest. "Lihim Sa Ilalim ng Balat (Secret Under
My Skin)" is about an OFW who was abused as a
child. "Homecoming" is about a beloved Lolo’s
journey. "The Stain (Batik sa Dugo)" is about two
HIV/AIDS cases, while "Idol Ko Si Kuya" is about
fraternity hazing. "Victor/ Victoria" is about the life
of a Filipino gay man, "Kuya's Picture (Retrato ni
Kuya)" is about a young man and how he deals with
violence done to his father and sisters, while "Apat
Ang Sulok ng Kalayaan ni Bobby (Freedom Has Four
Corners)" is about a Muntinlupa ex-convict, among
many other true stories – all unique, revealing, and all
being spoken for the first time.
 My Name is Rachel Corrie (2010)
Corrie was a 23-year-old American peace advocate
who was bulldozed to death in 2003 while protecting
the home of a Palestinian family from demolition.
opera singing is. She also reveals her own
contradictory personality—proud and egotistical yet
also vulnerable and self-pitying. In spite of all the
flaws of its main character, however, Master Class,
written by a man who has been a Callas fan since he
was a teenager in high school, is a tribute to the
dedication of a great singer and actress to her chosen
art.
 The Mikado (2013)
“The Mikado” is a comic opera in two acts, with
music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S.
Gilbert. It remains the most frequently performed
Savoy opera, and it is especially popular with
amateur and school productions.

POC (PHILIPPINE OPERA COMPANY)

Types of Production: Classical music performances, both

foreign and Filipino.

Major Productions:

 Harana (2009)
Harana showcases Filipino music from different
historical periods, from pre-colonial pieces to
contemporary hits. It is a combination of songs that
celebrates local artistry and the country’s rich history.
 Master Class (2010)
MASTER CLASS is based on a series of master
classes given by the renowned opera singer Maria
Callas at the Juilliard School of Music in New York
in 1971 and 1972.

Maria Callas (1923–77), was the greatest dramatic

soprano of her generation and also a controversial
figure. Her restless and tempestuous personality often
led her into disputes with opera managements and
feuds with rival singers. However, she was adored by
her fans and was the subject of constant media
attention, including gossip about her jet-set life with
the wealthy Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis.

Although Master Class does delve into the triumphs

and tragedies of Callas’s life, its primary focus is the
art of dramatic singing. As McNally’s fictional
version of Callas teaches her class, she explains to
her students, two sopranos and a tenor, just what it
takes to invest the music with real feeling, revealing
as she does so how demanding the profession of
