Caring of baby wearing diaper
Diaper
A diaper is a type of underwear that allows baby to defecate or urinate without the use of toilet,
by absorbing waste products to prevent soiling of outer clothing.
They are convenient to use. They are easily available and also can be disposed easily
after use.
Using a diaper saves time as it decreases the frequency of changing diaper compared to
cloth diaper.
Diapers can be used in sick babies who cannot urinate and defecate normally.
Diapers are useful for babies travelling to long distance or going for an outing.
They are expensive as a baby can use about 7-8 diapers per day.
They can cause skin rashes due to prolong use of wet diapers as moisture can be a perfect
breeding ground for bacteria.
Diapers can cause toilet training more difficult as babies feel comfortable in diapers and
do not show signals of urinating or defecation.
They may cause allergic reactions to babies.
Diapers makes a baby prone to catch skin and urine infections as it creates an appropriate
condition for bacteria and other germs to breed.
Use of diapers and not changing it frequently may also hinder walking in babies.
Diapers are not environment friendly as they contain plastics, synthetic fibers and other
chemicals that cause environmental pollution.
Check the baby’s skin frequently to ensure that there are no rashes.
Avoid heavier diaper during day time. Use soft cloth diaper as much as possible.
Always wash hands before and after changing baby’s diaper.
Change diapers once in 2-3 hours to avoid rashes and infections.
When babies pass stool remove the diaper immediately, gently wipe stool from skin using
water and mild cleansers, such as dove.
Avoid over-washing the skin especially with perfumed soaps or commercial wipes that
may be irritating.
After removing diaper, dry it thoroughly and apply baby lotion, coconut oil or
moisturizer over the skin.
After removing diaper, don’t make the baby wear diaper immediately. Allow his skin to
breath and let it be free for some time.
Give baby a diaper free time of 3-4 hours in a day.
If there are any marks around the baby's legs and waist, the diaper is too tight so get a
looser fit for next time.
Use the alternatives of disposable diaper as far as possible. the alternatives may be:
Soft cotton cloths
Make sure the area is dry and clean before putting on a new diaper.
Change diaper once during night.
Summary
Disposable diapers are used by many people for their babies for their convenience. But
precautions should be taken while wearing a diaper to baby as it may cause rashes, infection and
allergic reactions. Frequent changing of diapers, cleaning baby's skin after removing diaper,
washing hands before and after changing diaper, providing a diaper free time etc. are the
measures to avoid any problems arising from use of diaper.
