Topic 4 (V): Flow Around Submerged Objects

Objectives:
1. To understand the drag force, Stokes’ Law & Terminal Velocity.
2. To solve the problems regarding to the flow around submerged objects.

Lecture Outline:
1. Drag force on a sphere:

2. Particle Reynolds number: Figure 6.24

3. Stokes’ Law – laminar flow, Newtonian fluid

4. Terminal velocity – the sum of the forces acting is zero, so the particle continues
to fall at a constant velocity.

5. Estimate the terminal settling velocity in air of a dust sphere with diameter 1 and
SG = 2.
6. A solid steel sphere of SG = 7.85 and diameter 0.02 m is falling at its terminal
velocity through water. What is its velocity?

7. A cylindrical chimney is 1.5 m in diameter. The wind is blowing horizontally at a

velocity of 32 km/hr. What is the wind force per m of height on the chimney?
