1. Introduction
From 7th November, 2016 to 15th December, 2016 I have worked as internship at IT
department of Islington college formerly known as Informatics college, situated at
Kamalpokhari Kathmandu with the role of IT support intern. This institution is one of the
premier college in the history of Nepal providing affordable international degree in
Information Technology (IT) and Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) having
affiliation to London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom since 1996 A.D. The
college was founded by Mr. Sulabh Budhathoki, one of the pioneer person in the history
of education premises of Nepal. And the college is driving itself ahead with the mission
of developing quality excellence in students by inspiring them to learn practically so that
they can face the challenges in real world.
During the phase of internship, I have to work with IT staffs and other internship
members to solve the issues related to computer technology under the supervision of
Mr. Sulabh Khanal, who is also the IT manager of the college.

2. Review of Activities
2.1 (LO3) Hardware maintenance
During the first week of my internship, supervisor assigned me a task to check the labs
with other internship members where mostly I have to check whether the each and
every component of PCs such as Mouse, Keyboard, LAN and CPU are working or not.
And if any of the above components founds to be malfunctioning, I have to report the
problem to supervisor and on the basis of decision provided I have to apply the solution
to the problem.
Another task that was assigned to me with other members of IT during the week was to
check the 50 PCs which were going to be deployed in Meryland college, one of the
branch of Islington college. Where I have to check if every hardware parts are working
or not. If needed I have to replace the malfunctioning parts with new one and if found
the malfunctioning parts can be solved I have to apply a possible solution and have to
mend that part.
2.2 (LO1) Group working skills
During the time of second week, supervisor assigned me with other two intern members
to create a lab sheet in Microsoft Visio. Where we have to draw all the PCs with their
location so that in future, it will be easier to perform lab maintenance. Furthermore, in
the same week, I with other two intern members were assigned to scan the photographs
and edit them with Adobe Photoshop so that they will effectively fit in the college identity
cards.
2.3 (LO4) Network maintenance
For third week, supervisor assigned me a task to extend the college network with other
intern and college staffs to short out the shortage of bandwidth in few labs. During the
time, we extend the twisted pair cable from the server room up to the required labs and
crimped the cable properly to connect it with switch. Furthermore, during the week we
were assigned to assemble the server rack and set the switches in the rack. During the
time, we assembled the different dismantled parts of rack and set the switches with
standard method as provided.
2.4 (LO2) Communication and Request handling skills
For fourth week, supervisor assigned me a task to solve the different issues of students
who came in IT department. During the time, I have to install the necessary software’s
as asked by them. And also during the week, we internship members were assigned to
communicate with the professor of LMU professors to solve the technical issues when
they were giving lectures to the students in lecture hall.
2.5 (LO5) Software installation and Troubleshooting
During final two days, we two members were assigned a task to install the new image in
the lab. During the time, we installed the image in each and every PC of lab and
checked Operating System, if activated or not. And if OS found to be not activated we
cracked the system with the tool named KMSpico. Furthermore, during the week I was
assigned to dual boot the needy student’s PCs, who came in IT department to sort out
their problems.

3 Academic Context
Mostly I have been wondering where does all the modules that I have studied till today
will be used in my career. And finally, I realized that almost every module has helped
me to complete my job experience.
Regarding the first-year module, Personal development for communication technology
and Module have really helped me to develop skills such as communication, team
working and time management skills. And furthermore, almost in every module we have
been doing group works, which has helped me a lot to make myself team player.
Another module named Hardware and software architecture that I studied during the
time of first year has helped me a lot to understand and identify the basic problems
related to computer technology. In addition to this, this module has helped me to
improve my knowledge on software installation and troubleshooting.
Other cisco related modules such as Network basics, Network devices and Local Area
Network have helped me to understand about configuration of routers and switches.
Also, they have helped me to learn about the physical infrastructure of server racks and
other network components.
Another first-year module i.e. Introduction to Internet really helped me to learn about
the photoshop. Similarly, second year module i.e. Software Engineering has helped me
about how to operate Microsoft Visio to draw different diagrams as we used to design
different level of Data Flow Diagrams.
4 Abilities Evaluation
4.1 Patience
During the first week of time, I was mainly assigned to the task of hardware and lab
maintenance. Throughout the week, I got myself repeating the one or two tasks mostly.
And doing same thing over a several times without any experience makes the people
lazy. However, I coped with the situation very well and worked throughout the week with
great patience.
4.2 Communication skills
During the first week of time, I used to solve the problem encountered mostly at first
without having any experiences. Due to which mostly I was unable to solve the
problem. So, I decided to communicate with supervisor and started to discuss about the
problems identified. Later I found communication is not important only for getting
solutions also it is important for understanding others problems, which I reflect myself
during the fourth week while helping with other student’s problems. Now I think I have
developed the communication skills during the time of internship.

4.3 Time management skills

During the first two weeks of my internship, I found that I was lagging behind other
working individuals. During that period of time I was unable to complete the tasks either
important or other assigned to me in time. Later I discovered that I was going thoroughly
with every task without taking into the account of completion of task so later I decided to
drive myself toward the concept of concise work load prioritization by asking supervisor
about which is task for the day is important so that I can finish early and manage the
remaining time with other tasks.
4.4 Analytical thinking skills

4.5 Dual Booting

During the fourth week, I was assigned to solve the problems of students who came in
IT department for support. During that phase, one student came and ask me to dual
boot his computer, so I tried to dual boot his computer but was unable to complete the
phenomenon successfully. Because of this I endeavor to learn dual booting. To learn
dual booting I researched over YouTube and Google and further ask the supervisor and
finally learned the process.

5 Challenges
The main challenge during internship period was time management, as I have to
manage time for classes, internship and assignments.
6 Conclusion
Conclusively I mention that this Work-Related Learning module has really helped me to
gain real time experience of professionalism. And furthermore, the module has given
me something fruitful experience which I can sum up in my Curriculum Vitae.
Writing a weekly logbook mentioning what I did well and what I can improve on really
helped me to reflect myself on my positive as well as negative aspects. As a
compulsion, we have to improve skill as mentioned on the section of what I can improve
on of previous log, has helped me to develop new skills weekly. And most importantly
this module has taught me how the modules that we studied are practically implied in
the real world.
