1. INTRODUCTION
This report is prepared upon the agreement between Geocom International (P) Ltd, Kathmandu and Planet Test
(P.) Ltd., Shantinagar, Kathmandu. It includes the final result of the field sampling, laboratory tests for the soil
sample collected along TU Gate - Chovar Road.
2. CBR TEST
The CBR test (California Bearing Ratio test ) is a penetration test which evaluates the strength of flexible pavements in
soaked or un-soaked condition. CBR test is the most widely used method for the checking and design of road and
pavement.
The test in which a ratio expressed in percentage of force per unit area required to penetrate a soil mass with a
circular plunger of 50 mm diameter at the rate of 1.25 mm per minute to that required for related penetration in a
standard material.
The CBR value is usually determined for penetration on 2.5 mm and 5 mm. Where the ratio at 5 mm is consistently
higher than that at 2.5 mm, the ratio at 5 mm is used.
The Standard followed for CBR test of soil is IS: 2720 (Part-16).
Dynamic Compaction method was used for Compaction of CBR Test, and the following procedure was followed for
Compaction:
a. In dynamically compaction method, we took initially 5.5 kg to 6.0 kg soil sample by sieving as we described
above.
b. Water weight was of OMC % of the soil weight. We checked either soil weight is 6000 gm then water weight =
6000 * 12.0 % = 720 gram is ready or not.
c. Soil and water was mixed properly in a non-absorbent tray.
d. CBR mould with extension collar was made ready for placing soil sample.
e. Spacer disc in mould and a filter paper on spacer disc was placed.
f. Mould was filled in five equal layers by giving 55 blows with a 4.89 kg rammer.
g. Minimum of 50 gram soil sample from mixed soil was filled to the mould each time.
h. After completing the fifth layer, extension collar was removed and an extra soil was struck off from the top of
the mould.
i. The nuts was loosed which was attached to the mould with base plate and turned to the filled mould vertically
which means top surface was put down on the base plate and tighten the nuts.
j. Spacer disc from the top of the filled mould was removed.
k. The weight of filled soil and mould was taken.
l. Extension collar was attached.
m. Filter paper was added on the top of the soil then it was inserted to one perforated disc.
n. Two surcharge weights (each 2.5 kg) on the perforated disc was placed. Then first specimen was ready
o. Similarly other specimen was prepared.
p. The Prepared Specimen was kept in water tank for four days for soaked CBR value.
Soaked Specimen CBR test was followed and the following procedure was adopted for the test:
a. Three specimens from water were removed and then the surcharge weight (2.5 kg * 2) was also removed
along with perforated disc and filter paper.
b. It was allowed to drain water by keeping the specimens horizontally for at least 10 minutes.
c. The weight of soil and mould was taken.
d. Then both surcharge weight (2.5 kg * 2) was placed in the same mould.
e. The first specimen with both surcharge weights was placed in CBR testing machine plate under penetration
plunger.
f. Both dial gauge load and penetration reading was set.
g. Speed or rate of loading of the machine was maintained at 1.25 mm per minute.
h. Both dial gauges was set to zero before starting the machine.
i. The machine was started until the plunger touches the top surface of the soil in mould and reading has
reached 4 kg in the load dial gauge. And then it was stopped.
The reading and Calculation was down as per the Standard IS: 2720 (Part-16). The reading and the Calculation of the
test has been attached in the following section.
