Weekly Journal - Capstone Project

Progress I have made during this past week:

(Don’t forget to provide a breakdown of time spent on each item listed)
● I found and watched many Youtube videos for signing in different tenses - 1 hour
● I completed my research on the impacts of the pandemic on the deaf/hard-of-hearing
communities - 1 hour and 30 minutes
● I continued to learn ASL through the official online lessons (I completed 5 lessons in total) - 5
hours
● I watched the few refresher videos that were suggested by my mentor - 45 minutes

What I need to move forward with my Capstone (time, space, materials, contacts):
● I will need to spend an adequate amount of time to brainstorm ideas and to create a detailed
plan for my final presentation (this may involve contacting my teacher to get a better
understanding of what is required for the final presentation)
● Throughout the upcoming week, I will have to spend 5-7 hours to continue to complete my
ASL lessons
● I will have to search for and watch Youtube videos that provide tips for understanding
faster-paced signing

Obstacles I have encountered and how I’ve moved forward:

● At the start of this week, I really had some difficulty with focusing while working on my
Capstone project
○ For some reason, I was just in this “vacation mode” mindset and I kept on easily
getting distracted
● In order to maintain my focus while working on my Capstone project…
○ I moved all distractions away from myself (e.g. putting my phone away, closing my
door)
○ I organized and cleared my workspace
■ Surprisingly, by clearing my desk, I was able to have a more clear and
focused mind
○ I would set a timer on my alarm clock and then I would have to get certain tasks done
in that period of time
■ I would also take breaks and reward myself between these work periods

Obstacles I can foresee in my next steps:

● I may have some trouble with brainstorming ideas and creating a detailed plan for my final
presentation because as of right now, we don’t have lots of information about what the
requirements are for the final presentation
○ However, I will be contacting my teacher via email for more information regarding the
final presentation

The skills I’ve used and what I’ve learned:

● Responsibility - This week, I think I really showcased my responsibility by taking certain
actions to avoid distractions while working. Thus, I was able to catch up on my project
● This week, I learned that it’s very important to maintain a balance between school and leisure
activities
○ Although it’s important to give our brain some rest and to relax, I learned that it’s still
very important to keep up with school and to follow through with my goals
○ That being said, I am happy that I recognized that I was falling behind and came up
with a plan of how I can catch up and maintain my focus while working on my project
My goals and deadlines for next week:
● Continue to complete my ASL lessons
● Find lesson videos online about understanding faster-paced signing
● Contact my teacher, and brainstorm ideas as well as create a detailed plan for my final
presentation
● Continue to create schedules, use my planner, and avoid distractions to ensure that I
efficiently organize and use my time

My evidence of progress. This can include but is not limited to: diagrams, screenshots,
photos, videos, rough drafts, schedules, meeting notes, mind maps, etc.
