Voltaren Emulgel 1%

Please read this leaflet carefully before you start using Voltaren Emulgel. Keep it,
you may need to read it again. If you have any questions, or you are not sure about
anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Voltaren Emulgel :
Voltaren Emulgel is a white, pleasant-smelling, cooling, non-greasy gel, available in tubes of
20g and 50g.
Each 100 g of gel contains as active substance 1.16 g of diclofenac diethylammonium, which is
equivalent to 1 g diclofenac sodium.
The other ingredients, which give the product its consistency and allow the active substance
diclofenac to be well absorbed through the skin, are: carbomer, cetomacrogol, caprylic/capric acid
fatty alcohol ester, diethylamine, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, liquid paraffin, perfume and
water.

1. What Voltaren Emulgel is and what it is used for ?

Voltaren Emulgel is specially formulated for rubbing into the skin. It contains a substance called
diclofenac which is one of the group of medicines called non-steroidal antiinflammatory analgesics,
used to relieve pain and reduce swelling in a number of painful conditions affecting the joints and
muscles.
Voltaren Emulgel relieves rheumatic and muscular pain, and reduces swelling and
inflammation, e.g., in injuries involving the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. For the
relief of sprains, strains or bruises, backache, tendinitis (e.g., tennis elbow), and for localised
and mild arthritis.
Voltaren Emulgel may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

2. Check before you use Voltaren Emulgel :

Read the following information before you use Voltaren Emulgel.
Do not use Voltaren Emulgel :
If you have ever had an allergic reaction (e.g., skin rash or wheezing) in the past after taking
medicines containing diclofenac, aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other medicine used to treat painful
joints and muscles.
If you are allergic to propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients listed in the beginning of
this leaflet.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above apply because Voltaren Emulgel is not
suitable for you in these circumstances.

Take special care with Voltaren Emulgel :

Do not apply to skin with conditions such as cuts, open wounds or eczema.
Be careful not to get Voltaren Emulgel in your eyes. If this happens, rinse your eyes with
clean water and tell your doctor.
 Do not swallow.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding :

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist before use. It is especially
important not to use Voltaren Emulgel during the last 3 months of pregnancy.

Voltaren Emulgel and children :

Do not use Voltaren Emulgel in children below 12 years of age.

Taking other medicines :

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are taking, or have recently taken,
including any you have bought without a medical prescription.

3. How to use Voltaren Emulgel ?

For adults and adolescents over 12 years of age: Gently rub a small amount of Voltaren Emulgel
3 to 4 times daily into the skin where you have pain or swelling. The amount needed depends on
the size of the affected area. Usually, an amount ranging in size from a cherry to a walnut will be
enough.
Wash your hands after the application, unless of course they are the site being treated.
Do not use for more than 2 weeks, unless recommended by your doctor. If the pain and
swelling do not improve within 7 days, or if they get worse, tell your doctor.
Contact your doctor immediately if you find you have accidentally used more Voltaren Emulgel
than recommended, or in case of accidental ingestion.

4. What side-effects can Voltaren Emulgel have ?

Usually Voltaren Emulgel does not cause problems. However, like all medicines, it can
sometimes cause side effects in some people.
Effects which may occur include : occasionally: itching, reddening or smarting of the skin. Very
rare: increased sensitivity of the skin to the sun.
The following reactions are very rare. If you experience any of the following, STOP using
Voltaren Emulgel and tell your doctor immediately :
skin rash
wheezing, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face.
Also tell your doctor if you notice any other effects which you think may be related to the use of
Voltaren Emulgel.

5. Storing Voltaren Emulgel :

• Do not store above 30°C.
• Do not store after the expiry date shown on the box.
• Keep Voltaren Emulgel out of the reach and sight of children.
