SCOPE:
This specification establishes the requirements for an air drying finish medium gloss gray water-borne
enamel. This material contains a V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Content) of 1.8 lbs. per gallon at the application
viscosity.

MATERIAL: For Carrier plants to purchase materials covered by this specification, and use in Carrier
products, the material must be approved by Materials and Technical Services and the supplier’s quality
system must be Qualified/Certified by the Carrier user plant.

SUPPLIER APPROVAL: Materials and Technical Services will test, in accordance with the requirements of
this specification, a quantity of material necessary to give valid results. The material must be supplied from a
production run using standard production methods. Only material that has met all requirements will be
classified as “approved”. Approved suppliers are listed on the last page of this specification.

SUPPLIER QUALIFICATION/CERTIFICATION: The Carrier user plant, or designated lead purchasing


plant, must qualify/certify all suppliers of production materials in accordance with the existing Carrier
Supplier Quality Assurance Requirements.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
The following requirements shall be met by all materials covered by this specification:

1. Viscosity, undiluted, #3 Zahn, sec. 45 - 50


2. Weight per gallon, + 0.2 lbs/gal. 10.07 ± .2 lbs/gal
3. Solids, % by Weight + 2.0 50.3 ± 2.0
4. Solids, % by Volume + 1.0 38.4 ± 1.0
5. Recommended Film Thickness, dry 0.003 in. min.
6. Dry film gloss, 60 deg. 60
7. Salt spray, per ASTM B117 500 hours min. (primer plus topcoat)
8. Adhesion, cross-hatched The finished material shall meet
ASTM D3359 using SCOTCH
brand tape #610 or equivalent. The
tape removed shall show no paint
adhering to it, except for very light
lines of paint particles remaining
from the brushed scribe lines.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET:


All materials covered in this specification must have a recent (< 2 years old) copy of an OSHA 20 form
(MSDS) or applicable regional form disclosing hazardous material content on file in the Corporate Industrial
Hygiene Department. Suppliers must supply a copy with each material submitted for qualification or upon
changes in material content or rules governing such disclosures. The Engineering Department requesting this
specification is responsible for delivering the correct form to the Corporate Industrial Hygiene Department.
