Lesson plan by Dorina Rusznák & Zsombor Dörnyei

Romantic poetry

Since they (and we) are going to be English teacher, we also have to help students

improve their language skills. In the Hungarian education system, the main emphasis is on

grammar, but not literature. We can seldom see lessons in secondary school where teachers

talk about American/British literary works. In this case, it is quite the opposite. We

concentrate on the literary work and deal with grammar / language skills for a moment. I

would be interested in how they would solve the problem of teaching the words and their

spellings to the students. It would certainly take some time. Again, I am curious how they

would arrange the discussion about the poem. It is probable that students will be afraid to tell

their opinions, so it is a good idea, to ask questions, but again, how are you sure that then they

will answer your question? What if they will not? What would you do then?

It is a brilliant idea to look for a real-life correspondent to the concepts represented in

the poem. This way students will be able to connect those together, thus remember the basic

content of the poem, understand that and incorporate it into their personality. It is a pretty

good idea.
Having students to write a poem is an excellent idea. Not just the mere fact that they

must write a poem, but the way too. Writing a poem together, cooperatively, is great since

they will “fight” for each other and try to work harder. For this reason, it would have been

wiser to use cooperative tasks in the beginning of the task.

I give 10 points for this lesson and lesson plan. I give 10 points for the former since I think it

would have been edifying to the children / students.
