really worth opening an account with us. What else would you like to know?
15
Exam Task
You are good with money. Your English friends are having financial problems and have asked
for your help. Match the situations (1-5) with your tips (A-I). One situation has no match. Use
the symbol for this. There is an example (0) for you.
SITUATION TIP
0 Tom often makes purchases he can’t afford and uses his credit card. A
Lucy believes in retail therapy and always looks as if she’s just stepped off the
1
catwalk.
2 Jack has time on his hands but his manager doesn’t let him do overtime.
Katie is an impulse buyer and comes home from grocery shopping with a lot of
3
unnecessary things.
5 Carol usually drives to the shopping centre at the other end of town.
A. I have a credit card for emergencies that luckily I’ve never needed. If your debt is on your Nordst-
rom card, you have to get your priorities straight and decide if this is what you really want. Pay your
cards off immediately.
B. When I reality-check myself, it’s like this: I don’t necessarily need to keep up with the latest fashion
trends. Now, if you really don’t buy those clothes, you have just saved yourself a couple hundred
bucks!
C. When I was saving for my second trip to India, I worked on average five 12-hour night shifts a week,
and sometimes worked 8 days in a row. It was hard but I was determined. Set your budget based on
the money you will make working extra hours (only if you know they will be available) and then you’ll
feel obligated to go in when work calls for help.
D. You have to revert back to university ways. Pregame. Really hard. I would actually try not to buy
more than one drink while I am out. I also choose beer over liquor. Every dollar counts. Stay in and
watch a free DVD instead of spending 10 bucks at the theatre.
E. Babysit, housesit, or mow lawns. Advertise at work for babysitting. Act like you are 10 and ask your
parents for money to wash the cars. Get a part time job somewhere where you usually spend money
and can take advantage of the discount.
16
F. Use coupons. Stop buying expensive food. Always go when your belly is full. Stop buying drinks and
stick to water. Not everyone can eat like I do (because I eat like a 15-year-old boy) but you might end
up saving 100 dollars a month on food.
G. Gas is expensive. Try to spend a day off doing everything in one area then only drive to work and
back during the week. This is easy for me because I live in a city that is walkable.
H. This is an oldie but a goodie: go home for the weekend. You’ll get free food, you won’t be tempted
to go out and spend money, and you can spend time with your family before your trip.
I. Work until the day you leave for your holiday, don’t take extra days-off before. This way, two weeks
into your trip another paycheck magically appears. You should do this before any big trip.

speak for 3 minutes on your own. You get a topic and 4 guidelines
to help you speak. Imagine that your friend would like a new mobile
and is interested in your experience.
Speak about the 4 points below and try to use the following linking words on the right.

Conversation
In the Conversation task of the Speaking part, you might have to explain something to your
friends. Look at the phrases and put them into the appropriate category. Try to add some more
phrases.
Giving explanation
I don’t quite get that. What I mean is this … Could you please explain to me how …?
In other words, … I beg your pardon. Just let me explain. Look, what you should do is this…

Imagine that one of your friends has received a smartwatch for her birthday but she has no idea how
to use it.
Act out the conversation and try to use the expressions from the chart.
Check the Speaking Kit at the end for more ideas.
Anne: Look, what I got for my birthday. It’s called a smartwatch, but I don’t know how to use it.
You:
Anne: That sounds exciting, how can I set it up?
You:
Anne: That’s great. Then I turn it on, and I can listen to music, call my friends and use it as an alarm
clock, just like a mobile. But why is it better than a mobile? I still don’t get it.
You:
Thomas: I think it’s just easier to use and carry and that’s all. But other than that, absolutely
unnecessary. Another useless gadget.
You:
Anne: Well, I hope I will be able to use this. It’s great that we have so many inventions. Which had the
greatest influence on you?
Thomas: The Internet and all the technology that goes with it. It has changed my life completely.
You:
Anne: You can say that again! I, personally, can’t wait to own self-driving cars. What do you think of
them?

Exam Task
You’ll read an article about 3D images. Mark the right answer
(A, B or C). There is an example (0) for you.
‘Knowing’ in 3D
“Everything you know is in 3D. You too can see—hear—experience—feel—know. All of this can be
yours.” These words flash onto the screen during a movie trailer, which promotes itself as the first
live-action digital 3D film. But this movie is not the first to claim that one can possess knowledge
by visualizing the world in three dimensions. At the turn of the twentieth century, stereograph
companies such as Underwood proclaimed that “To see is to know.”
Stereography was an early form of three-dimensional photography. Two nearly identical images were
placed side-by-side on cardboard. When viewed through a special viewer, the stereoscope, the two
images would merge into one with the illusion of three-dimensionality. Stereographs are taken from
a slightly different perspective and then mounted side by side. Both Underwood and its competitor
Keystone View Company enlisted educational experts to testify to the importance of “eye-work” and
the ways that the realism of stereography enhanced learning. Not coincidentally, both companies
sold stereograph sets to schools and provided detailed guides for teachers and students.
These guides reflected the prejudices and ideologies of the time; for instance, Visual Education
Through Stereographs and Lantern Slides: School Work (1917) advanced a virulent “racial geography”
that characterized whites as the “great race,” blacks as the “least progressive”. In the late 1930s, 2/3
of all public schools used stereographs; of course, by then, stereographs were being supplanted by
movies as the leading mass media. What can we learn from looking at early 20th century 3D media?
Perhaps most importantly, the example of the stereographs reinforces the need for media literacy.
Even if we get immersed in the wonders of 3D, we need to maintain a critical distance and exercise
judgment, to understand how 3D images are constructed and for what purposes.
Today’s 3D technology also makes it possible to make you drawn into the movie. Certainly, this
technology also has its educational potential. For example, the medium has the power to transport
you (if the technology were cheaper) to virtual tours of historic sites or training sessions in physical
skills (e.g., surgery in 3D). It’s important, however, that even as we immerse ourselves in the visions
made possible by technology, we also take off the dorky-cool stereo glasses and see with clear eyes.
39
1. The 3D movie experience is …
A) able to provide you with more knowledge than ever before.
B) preceded by the invention of the stereograph.
C) the first device to help us visualize the world.

Hello everyone. My name is Luca. On behalf of Suntan Tours, I’d like to welcome you all to Los Cabos.
The bus ride to your hotel will take about fifteen minutes. Right now, I’d like to take a minute to
familiarize you with the area and discuss some brief safety precautions. Firstly, I ask that you remain
seated until we reach our destination and that you not eat or drink while on the bus. Secondly, please
realize that it is against the law to drink in public. Enjoy your vacation but do drink responsibly and do
not drink and drive.
I promise you are going to enjoy your stay here in San Jose, Los Cabos. This is a beautiful, quiet city
where you can relax, sit by the beach, enjoy great meals and feel very safe. You can walk into town
and enjoy the fountains or take a moonlit walk along the water. Please do not swim here. This is not a
safe place to swim because there is a strong undertow. Cabos San Lucas is the place to go if you want
to enjoy swimming in the ocean. You can take a short bus ride from your hotel. There you will also
enjoy entertainment and dancing.
Suntan tours offers a variety of special discounts depending on your travel plans. We have golf
packages, as well as guided whale boat tours, and fishing charters. There will be a short information
session at 1pm in the lobby of the hotel tomorrow where you can learn all about these offers. We
recommend that you do not purchase packages from street vendors as they are not always 100
percent reliable. They also may charge you more than what they say. Please take my advice and allow
Suntan tours to book all of your day trips and activities while you are here.
If you need to exchange your dollars into pesos, please use a bank or money exchange. We don’t
recommend exchanging your money at the hotel because you won’t get a fair rate. Some restaurants
will accept American or Canadian money, but you are better off to exchange your money and pay
with pesos. Or, if you prefer, you can always use your credit cards. Also, if you want to get around the
city, or travel to Cabos San Lucas, we recommend that you take the local bus rather than a taxi. The
bus costs about one American dollar, and the driver can give you change if you don’t have the exact
amount. If you do decide to take a taxi, make sure that you negotiate a price before you go.
We’re going to be pulling up to the hotel in just a few minutes. Please sit back and enjoy the view
of the ocean on the left-hand side of the bus as we enter the city. I ask that you remain in your
seats until we have come to a complete stop. Javier will be meeting us at the bus to help you with
your bags. Please double check to make sure that your bag has been taken off the bus. On behalf
of Suntan Tours, have a wonderful vacation in San Jose and I hope to see you tomorrow at the
information session.
