1. GENERAL INFORMATIONS
1.1 General information
Sikaplan® WP 3150 sheet waterproofing membranes provide waterproofing contractors
and owners with a high performance material that can be used reliably for the
waterproof lining of swimming pools.
Sikaplan® WP 3150 sheet waterproofing membranes are suitable for private indoor and
outdoor pools, plus commercial and public swimming and leisure facilities. They have a
well proven and long track record and have been used extensively for both new build
projects and in the renovation of existing pools. The special properties and
characteristics of these Sikaplan® sheet waterproofing membranes, means that they
can provide cost-effective solutions for projects including crack and joint bridging
properties achieved from a loose laid, flexible and aesthetically pleasing waterproof
lining.
Fast installation procedures and the possibility of immediate use after completion of the
installation works and filling with water, are also important additional advantages in
many situations.
The single ply waterproofing membrane covers the entire wet area inside a swimming
pool structure and are loose laid on to the smooth substrate, over a geotextile fabric
protection layer, then they are welded together and fixed along the perimeter edges.
The pool structure must consist of a suitably solid and stable construction, such as
reinforced concrete or brickwork. Other water retaining structures, such as water tanks
for sprinkler systems, aqua-culture or for zoo animals, may also be lined in accordance
with this Method Statement, by prior agreement with the Technical Dept. of the local
Sika® Company.
Sikaplan® sheet waterproofing membranes must not be installed in pools with
irregularly curved shaped walls or floors. they must not be exposed to permanent water
temperatures exceeding +32°C. An alternative Sika waterproof lining solution with
SikaTop® Seal -107 and Sikagard® PoolCoat are recommended in these situations.

1.2. Limitations of membrane installations
These products and this installation Method Statement is not suitable for use in the
lining of pools with permanent water temperatures exceeding +32°C, or for the lining of
leisure pools with artificial waves. The installation procedures must be performed by
skilled and experienced swimming pool waterproof lining contractors and trained
Sikaplan membrane welders. The membrane installation works must also not be
performed at ambient temperatures below +/- 0°C.

1.3. Construction structural requirements

The structure must be designed and built in such a way that the Sikaplan® WP 3150
sheet waterproofing membranes can safely fulfil their function during their long service
life.
The structure must be designed to minimise movement due to structural settlement,
filling and emptying or temperature changes.
External ground water and percolating water measurements and an adequate drainage
system are required (i.e. will there be any external hydrostatic pressure from the
ground water, rain water, watering of plants, etc.).
The concrete cover to the steel reinforcement bars must be at least 20mm
All elements protruding from the pool structure and cast in to the concrete, i.e. low-
level water outlets, service pipes, holding down bolts for ladders, underwater
illumination equipment, etc. must be made of corrosion-free steel (i.e. stainless V2A or
V4A steel), or rigid plastic, suitable and approved for use in swimming pools. This
swimming pool equipment must also be installed with a perimeter flange system in
order to allow watertight sealing of the membranes around these elements.

It is recommended that an outlet should be fitted to the lowest point in the bottom of
the pool (or as an alternative for small pools: a bore hole dia. 20 - 30mm through the
bottom slab) in order to drain away any potential condensation water under the
installed waterproof membranes. If it is connected to the drainage system and
inspection man hole outside of the pool area, then this outlet can also be used to
check the water tightness of the installed waterproofing membrane.
The surfaces of the substrate must be smooth to prevent the waterproofing membrane
from being punctured under the internal hydrostatic pressure.

1.4. Waterproofing system

Unlike many other waterproofing systems such as cement based coatings, the
Sikaplan® WP 3150 sheet waterproofing membranes are loose laid without bonding to
the substrate. Linear fixings are used at all corners, edges and terminations.
The installation work is relatively simple and quick to complete by trained waterproofing
contractors. Additional advantages include the ability to easily check for leaks, plus the
fact that the pool can be put into use immediately after the installation is completed
(there are no delays because of curing or drying times for example).

An indoor pool structure often includes equipment service rooms alongside the actual
pool structure, for which the roof structure is often the floor / pool side. The installed
swimming pool lining can be continued with the Sikaplan membrane also being used
for waterproofing under the poolside walkway finishes, in order to prevent any
penetration of splash-water through the concrete roof / floor slab into the service
rooms.

3. INSTALLATION
3.1 General requirements for sheet membrane installation
Representatives of the waterproofing contractors invited to tender / bid for the
waterproofing must have the possibility of site inspection beforehand, in order to obtain
sufficient understanding of the project requirements for their quotations and in
preparation for the works to be carried out.
Electricity supply (110/220V/380V), clean water and on request, compressed air
(5 -10bar/1000 - 1500l/min.) must be available on site. The access to the site must be
adequate for all of the required machinery, equipment, tools and products for the
waterproofing works (i.e. through the entrance hatch or manholes into tanks). Any
unauthorised access must be prevented to avoid puncturing the installed
waterproofing. The waterproofing contractors must be instructed, that access onto the
installed membrane is only allowed in soft shoes with no sharp edges (i.e. shoes with
soft rubber soles). Smoking and open flames must not be permitted within the
installation area.

Wet substrates can be lined with the sheet waterproofing membranes, however any
running or ponding water must be removed and the surface maintained in a surface dry
condition (i.e. particularly in rainwater channels on the bottom), prior to the sheet
waterproofing membrane installation and until after completion of waterproofing works.

The installation procedure for sheet waterproofing membranes in swimming pools

depends on the:
• design of the structure
• type of substrate
• selected membrane type and its fixing method

The following installation instructions are divided into single operations, according to
the type of project. The operational sequences must finally be defined according to the
structures design and specifications.

Materials stockyard
A secure storage area to store the rolls of membrane, geotextile and all of the required
ancillary products and equipment, with access to lifting equipment able to safely
transport them from stock to the installation area, must be available close to the
installation area. The membranes must be stored protected from the sun and
weathering. Defined quantities of the waterproofing membranes, geotextile fabric,
fixings and ancillary materials must be available in and from this storage area, in order
to prevent any work interruptions due to lack of materials.

Installation equipment
Dependent on requirements, supply and install all equipment for the membrane
installation, i.e.:
• movable platforms for the waterproof lining of high walls
• movable unrolling hooks for installing the waterproof lining on slopes
• mobile pneumatic working platforms, or cranes
• lighting equipment, if works have to be performed indoors / in the dark
• power supply with 380V/220V to the installation area for the welding equipment
• lifting equipment, to lift membrane and geotextile rolls on to the working platforms,
i.e. light cranes
• ventilation equipment for any works in closed tanks

3.2 Substrate preparation

New concrete structures
The surface of concrete substrates must be smooth, i.e. steel float finish on the floor
and from first class formwork on the walls. Convex edges and corners must be
chamfered. Any ridges in the concrete substrate (i.e. from formwork) must be removed
mechanically and the area ground smooth. Any protruding nails or tie-wires must be
removed. Honeycombed areas must be cut out and then re-profiled using a suitable
repair mortar (i.e Sika repair mortars). Any leaking cracks must be sealed by injection
(i.e. Sika Injection systems and resins). The pool structure must be watertight to any
liquid water penetration from outside of the structure.

Brickwork walls require rendering with cement mortar at a thickness of at least 20mm.
Any uneven concrete on the bottom requires levelling with a cement or resin screed.
Aggregates in the render and screeds must not exceed 4mm diameter and the
surfaces must be finished smooth by steel float.
Any protruding elements, i.e. pipes, fittings, bolts, etc., must be prepared by grinding or
blast cleaning.
Finally, the entire surface must be cleaned thoroughly (i. e. using stiff bristle brushes
and then rinsing with clean water through a high pressure water jet cleaner). Any
ponding water must be removed. After drying with clean compressed air, the entire
substrate must be disinfected by the application of a 15%-chlorine bleach solution
(local supply), diluted with clean water (ratio 1-part solution : 9 parts water), or ready to
use disinfection product (i.e. Sanitized P 8103, or Bayrol Demykosan). This can be
spray applied. The disinfectant is then allowed to dry off (i.e. without rinsing). All
relevant safety measures must be observed when applying the disinfectant following
the instructions on the relevant PDS, MSDS and local regulations

Refurbishment of existing pool structures

Old waterproof linings and any debonded render, or screeds must be thoroughly
removed and replaced. Honeycombing and large cracks must be cut out and then re-
profiled using a suitable Sika repair mortar. Leaking cracks must be sealed by injection
(i.e. Sika Injection resin). Uneven substrates must be levelled with cement mortar
rendering or screeds. Aggregates of the render and mortar screeds must not exceed
4mm and the surfaces are to be finished by steel float.

Any protruding elements, i.e. pipes, fittings, bolts, etc., must be prepared by grinding or
blast cleaning.

Finally, the entire surface must be cleaned thoroughly (i. e. using stiff bristle brushes
and rinsing with clean water through a high pressure water jet cleaner). Any ponding
water must be removed.

After drying with clean compressed air, the entire substrate must be disinfected by
application of 15%-chlorine bleach solution (local supply), diluted with clean water
(ratio 1part solution : 9 parts water), or ready to use disinfectant (i.e. Sanitized P 8103,
or Bayrol Demykosan). This can be spray applied. The disinfectant is then allowed to
dry off (i.e. without rinsing). All relevant safety measures must be observed when
applying disinfectant, following the instructions on the relevant PDS, MSDS and local
regulations.
All plumbing and electrical systems and connections must be inspected, tested and
upgraded as necessary in order to conform to the relevant standards. Alternatively they
must be removed and replaced as required.

The water treatment system must also be thoroughly inspected, tested and adjusted to
the relevant local Standards and recommendations of the pool water chemicals
supplier.

3.3 Protective layers

The waterproofing membrane must be installed protected from the hard substrate with
a geotextile fabric cushion layer. The geotextile must be needle punched
polypropylene non-woven fabric, or heat cured woven fabric. Chemically cured
geotextile is not compatible with membranes and therefore must not be used (due to
the chemical binder),
The geotextile must have a minimum unit weight of 300g/m2 on smooth concrete
substrates and 500g/m2 on rendered brickwork structures.
After installation, all geotextiles must be disinfected by spraying with disinfectant or a
suitable biocide from the geotextile supplier.
The geotextile must be temporarily fixed on the walls, or fixed over the installed
membrane fixing elements and loose laid with temporary ballast to hold it in position
(i.e. sandbags).
In order to prevent visibility of the geotextile behind the membrane under hydrostatic
pressure, the geotextile fabric layer must be butt jointed and not overlapped, in order to
achieve a smooth appearance.

3.6. Waterproofing penetrations details
Special care is required in connecting and waterproofing around any fittings or service
pipes etc., which penetrate the waterproofing membrane. To connect the sheet
waterproofing around fittings, it must be compressed between a fixed and a loose
flanged element.
To ensure water tightness at all penetrations (i.e. inlet-/outlet pipes, skimmers, lights,
holding down bolts, low level outlets, (which are all now mostly supplied as "ready to
mount-elements", available from swimming pool accessory suppliers), the following
detailing works must be performed:
• all components must be made of stainless steel, or rigid plastic, that is resistant to
weathering and swimming pool chemicals
• the surfaces of all components to be installed must be clean and free of oil and

3.7. Sheet waterproofing membrane on expansion joint openings

Expansion joints in the floors and walls must be covered with sheet metal supports
prior to the waterproofing membrane installation, this is in order to prevent looping of
the membrane into the joints under hydrostatic pressure. The metal sheets must be
fixed on one side of the joint only.
• The metal cover sheets can be made of stainless steel, or Sikaplan® WP - metal
sheet, width 200mm, with mounting holes 5mm ø, at a maximum of 150mm
centres.
• the metal sheets must be butt jointed with a gap of 5mm.
• the elements must be fixed with stainless steel screws / anchors, ø > 4.5mm,
length > 30mm into pre-drilled holes (remove drilling waste with a vacuum) fixed on
one side only and along the entire length of joint.
• each joint between the metal elements must be covered with self-adhesive tape
(width 20mm).
• loose layout of the geotextile and then the sheet waterproofing membrane across
the completed joint covering detail

3.8 Installation of sheet waterproofing membranes
Vertical area
Check surfaces of the geotextile and mounted metal elements to remove any loose
debris or sharp projections, prior to the membrane installation.
The sheet waterproofing membranes must always be unrolled and installed in a
vertical direction. However, if the wall height does not exceed the roll width, then the
membrane may be installed horizontally along the walls. Always ensure that the
positioning of the rolls gives the optimum aesthetic appearance.
The operational sequences are to be:
• cut the membranes to the approximate sizes as required
• Allow a minimum of 50mm membrane overlaps
• lay a wooden batten (thickness 20 -30mm) under the unfixed preformed Sikaplan®
WP - sheet metal at the bottom-wall intersection
• weld the membrane on the mounted PVC-laminated metal profiles of the
waterproofing termination details at the top of the pool
• welding the membrane on the vertical side of the unfixed preformed Sikaplan® WP
–sheet metal profiles at the bottom
• remove the wooden batten from underneath and lay it on top of the horizontal side
of the preformed Sikaplan® WP - sheet metal profiles
• step firmly on the wooden batten and press the Sikaplan® WP - sheet metal profile
against the wall and the bottom. Fix the horizontal side of the Sikaplan® WP - sheet
metal profile into the bottom with stainless steel, or corrosion resistant screws or
anchors into pre-drilled holes (remove drilling waste with a vacuum)
• repeat these sequences with the next rolls of membrane
• this operational sequences ensures that the membrane is pre-stretched sufficiently
for it to be installed firmly against the wall
• vertical overlaps must be welded upwards from the bottom to the top
• membranes over the expansion joints with mounted metal support covers must be
loose laid
• weld the installed membrane on to the previously prepared details (i.e.
penetrations) working progressively from the bottom to the top.

Horizontal area
Check the surfaces of the geotextile and mounted metal elements to locate and
remove any loose debris or sharp projections, prior to the membrane installation.
Membranes must always be unrolled and installed in the longitudinal direction of the
pool. Always ensure that the positioning of the rolls gives the optimal aesthetic
appearance.
Irregular shaped pools require detailed consideration of the best membrane laying
direction on the bottom (i.e. the most optimised to minimise cut losses and membrane
consumption, particularly with curved or rounded shapes and to maintain good
aesthetics with the membrane overlaps and welding)
The operational sequences are to be:
• cut the membranes to the approximate sizes as required
• allow a minimum of 50mm membrane overlaps
• unroll and positioning the sheets in 2 - 3 metre steps and pull the roll, in order to
maintain an even membrane surface, starting from the lowest point of pool bottom
and working upwards. This will also help to prevent settlement of dirt particles on
the edges of the welded seams during normal water circulation and use (the
accumulation of dirt could become visible).
• temporary ballast the membrane in position (i.e. with sandbags)
• weld the membrane on the horizontal and vertical sides of the mounted PVC-
laminated metal elements at the walls
• repeat these sequences with next rolls / pieces of membrane
• weld the membrane overlaps
• membranes over the expansion joints with mounted metal support covers must be
loose laid
• weld the installed membranes on to the previously prepared details (i.e.
penetrations) working progressively from the bottom to the top

Anti-slip membranes on horizontal area

For additional safety, in order to prevent users slipping on the horizontal treads of
stairs, standing ledges and the bottoms of non swimming / leisure pools, the
waterproofing membrane surface can be wholly or partially lined with Sikaplan® WP
3150-15 RE membrane, which has a slip resistant embossed surface.
For strip installation, weld the Sikaplan® WP 3150-15 RE embossed membrane sheets
or plates as required on to the previously installed Sikaplan® WP 3150-15 R
waterproofing membrane at all edges. The Sikaplan® WP 3150-15 RE plates must be
tightly butt jointed.

Lane marker plates
The dimensions and layout of swimming pool lane markers must generally comply with
the FINA Regulations and Standards (international rules for swimming competitions),
or they can be installed according to a client's specific design and requirements.
• mark the positions of lane markers with chalk lines on the installed waterproofing
membrane
• layout and position the Sikaplan® WP 3100-14 C Lane marker Plates.
• The Sikaplan Lane marker plates must be fully welded on to the top of the
previously installed waterproofing membrane and all joints between the Sikaplan
Lane Marker Plates must be butt-jointed.

4. WELDING METHOD
4.1 Heat welding
Sikaplan® WP sheet waterproofing membranes can be welded using
suitable heat welding equipment
• Seam overlaps of the membranes in all cases must be a minimum of 80mm
• the width of the finished welded seams (single and double seams) must be at
least > 30mm
• prior to welding procedures, the membrane surfaces must be dry, clean, and
free of any dust, oil and grease etc.
• Contaminated / dirty Sikaplan® WP membrane surfaces must be cleaned prior
to the welding procedures with Sika-Sikaplan® Cleaner 2000 (please refer to
the PDS and MSDS)
• prior to any heat welding work on site, it is mandatory to conduct a welding test
with actual membrane samples from the site (This is in order to correctly adjust
and set the welding temperature and speed of the machine)
• for continuous welding quality, it is recommended to use welding equipment
with
• its own power supply or generating set (i.e. automatic welding machine: 360V,
hand held welding gun: 220V or 110V according to local regulations)
• welding machine operators must be trained and experienced in heat welding
• and to operate electrical devices in wet or humid conditions according to local
regulations

5. QUALITY CONTROL
5.1. Testing of welded seams on water-tightness
All welded seams must be tested for water-tightness.
Testing methods depend on available testing equipment and/or clients specification.

Visual test with screw driver:

• Correctly heat welded single seams show continuous welding ‘rope’ at the
seam edge. Any irregular, or interrupted ‘rope’ can be an indication of voids or
capillaries in the seam welds
• Glide the head of the screwdriver (approx. size 2) with slight pressure along the
seam edge and check visually
• Any voids must be rectified and made good with a hand held welding gun and
20mm silicone roller

Visual test with vacuum bell:

This test requires the following testing kit:
• vacuum bell (Plexiglas, metal frame with rubber-pressure lips, reverse flow
valve,
• manometer gauge, hose connection)
• vacuum pump
• soap solution
• marking pen (chalk pen only)

Test procedure:
• Apply soap solution over the seam edges within the circumference of the
vacuum bell
• Press the vacuum bell firmly over the areas treated and build-up the vacuum
• Visually check the seams under the bell (any bubbling soap solution indicates a
leak)
• Remove the vacuum bell and clean the seam with a clean rag
• Any leaks must be rectified and made good with a hand held welding gun and
20mm silicone roller, or if more appropriate, covered and sealed with a welded
membrane patch

5.2. Testing of pool on water-tightness

Testing for watertightness must be undertaken after cleaning and disinfecting is
completed, usually during the filling of the pool for commissioning, using a ‘step by
step’ filling procedure over all major details and checking the water level, in order to
locate and rectify any leaks.
Running water in the pool control rooms adjacent to the pool itself might be a sign of
leaking, particularly if the pool is equipped with a low level outlet under the
waterproofing membrane which is connected to the drainage system. Alternatively on
the clients request and dependent on the capacity of the local water supply, the testing
of watertightness can be performed prior to the cleaning and disinfecting procedure, by
carrying out the same ‘step by step’ filling over all major details and checking the water
level in order to locate any possible leaks. This water has to be emptied out again for
the correct cleaning and disinfection to take place afterwards and prior to any use of
the pool.

5.3. Inspection of completed membrane lining

Representatives from the waterproofing contractor and the client must jointly inspect
the completed works. The inspection details must be recorded in a written report
signed by both parties.
The waterproofing contractor must keep the original product labels (including the batch
Nos.) of all of the membrane rolls installed, together with this inspection report in his
files.

6. CLEANING AND DISINFECTING
Once the membrane trimmings, tools and all other items of installation, inspection and
testing equipment have been cleared out of the pool, the waterproofing membrane
must be given an initial cleaning using a clean water spray. This initial cleaning is then
followed by the disinfection treatment.
The following disinfection agents are recommended:
• Sanitized P 8103
• Bayrol Demykosan
• Sikagard SB
The disinfection procedure with one of these products must be performed according to
the disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions. If none of these products are locally
available, a generic disinfectant produced on site can be used as follows: made from
15% concentrated chlorine bleach solution, diluted in clean water (mixing ratio 1 part
bleach solution : 9 parts clean water). This disinfectant solution must then be sprayed
on to the membrane and must remain on the membrane surface until it has dried off.
The membrane surface must then be thoroughly rinsed with clean water before filling
and use.
The water quality and water treatment requirements are dependent on the water
supply and local regulations.

7. COMMISSIONING AND MAINTENANCE
The pool filling procedure must be done as soon as possible after the cleaning and
disinfection procedures. The first 200 - 500 litres of water must immediately be drained
out again, in order to rinse the drainage systems. The final pool filling must be started
after this. The necessary water treatment to keep the water clean is dependent on the
systems installed and the local regulations, which can include:
• Chlorine treatment chemicals (the most widely used )
• Bromide treatment chemicals
• UV and/or ozone treatment (more expensive & newest technology)
The water cleaning and treatment must strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions..
Once the swimming pool waterproof lining is completed and approved, the pool
commissioning and maintenance is the responsibility of the owner.
In order to prevent stains, discoloration, or mechanical damage to the membrane, by
inadequate water cleaning or treatment / lack of maintenance etc, it is essential, that
the owner is informed by the Sikaplan membrane waterproofing contractor about the
correct pool commissioning and lining maintenance procedures.
Detailed recommendations for the correct commissioning and maintenance of pools,
including ‘hibernation’ for the winter season are available on our separate Swimming
Pool Membrane Maintenance sheet, which must also be handed to the swimming pool
owner by the Sikaplan waterproofing contractor.
The waterproofing contractor must keep the original product labels (including the batch
Nos.) of all of the installed membrane rolls in his files.
