The US Olympic selection committee will pick 4 athletes to make up the US Olympic team. Put a star next to
the 4 athletes that you would recommend to the committee.
In addition to mean and median, it could help the US selection committee to know about the standard deviation
of the gymnast’s scores. What does it mean if a gymnast has a small standard deviation between their scores?

What does it mean if a gymnast has a large standard deviation between scores?

Draw a bell curve and label the percentages that fall within each standard deviation. (Don’t worry about
labeling the standard deviation on the bottom). If Simone’s scores are three standard deviations higher than
anyone else, what is her percentile rank? What does this mean?
Simone Biles is currently considered the greatest gymnast of all time. Growing up, her scores were
significantly higher than her peers.
In this case, her scores would be an outlier. Draw a graph that shows a possible mean and median for her
childhood team.

Olympic trials will be held next summer in St. Louis. All of the competitors are incredibly talented, and most
will receive high scores. However, a few individuals will have an off day and receive low scores. Draw a
graph that depicts this scenario. Label a possible mean and median for comparison.
