Let’s Get Started (Activity 1)

1. Draw a map of where you live. Discuss the similarities, differences, styles, and techniques on your
map and compare them with two others. What are the commonalities between the maps? What
are the differences? What accounts for such similarities and differences?

• Answer:
I was able to make a map of our barangay, though it’s not really 100 percent accurate compare
to the original map of our barangay but it includes the popular locations when you visit Sto.
Nino Tunga Leyte. The other 2 maps I got it from google maps it has the same indicator in my
map but there are also missing like the river, other essential stores and no streets indicator. As
you can see in the 2 maps there is a School but I did not include in my map because it is from
other barangay. About the road placement, though it not looks similar but has the same layout.
About the houses I don’t think it’s the total number of houses in our barangay but the number
of houses near in our home is true.

2. Draw a map of the world and compare it to a world map in an atlas. What similarities and
differences are there? What explains the discrepancies between your map and the atlas?

• Answer:
As I finished to draw the world map and compared it to the world map in atlas, I observed
that my map isn’t as accurate as the world map in atlas an also miss some islands, countries
in my drawing although It have some similarities like where the other countries located.

3. Provide two questions concerned with geographic location, distribution, association, interaction,
and change about global warming, urbanization, biodiversity, economic development, and war.
• Answer:
What is the difference between climate change and global warming?
Climate change is a broader term that refers to long-term changes in climate, including
average temperature and precipitation. On other hand global warming is the increase of the
Earth's average surface temperature due to build-up of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.

How does urbanization affect climate?

Poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high
energy consumption are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands
of urban environments.
Urbanization also affects local winds and water cycles through the modification of natural
surfaces and atmospheric conditions and further changes the local weather and climate
system.

1. Find your hometown in the GNIS and see what other features share this name. Explore the
toponymy of your hometown online.

• Answer:
Tunga the Municipality of Tunga, is a 6th class municipality in the province
of Leyte, Philippines. It is the smallest municipality in Leyte, both in population and area.
The municipality of Tunga existed as early as 1860 as a barrio of Barugo. At that time
only about fifty families were residing there, most of them coming from the different
towns of Barugo and Jaro. One states that according to our forefathers, before Tunga
became a barrio, people from Ormoc, Barugo and Tacloban engaged in trade with each
other and they had to stop by or pass this place; some of them made it their contact
point for conducting their business. Through their exchange of ideas and conversations,
they concluded that this place was halfway between Ormoc and Tacloban
or Carigara and Jaro. Since it had no name at the time, people started calling it the
dialect for half.
On November 15, 1949, Provincial Board Secretary Ricardo Collantes, representing Leyte
Governor Catalino Landia, proclaimed the Municipality of Tunga before a huge crowd of
joyous Tunga-on and distinguished visitors.
The Tunga-on celebrate their town's fiesta on August 13 every year.
Tunga is politically subdivided into 8 barangays: Astorga Balire Banawang San
Antonio San Pedro San Roque San Vicente Santo Niño
2. How are GPSs and related navigation technology influencing how we learn about our local
environments?
• Answer:
Today GPS has become an essential part of our life from locating an establishment in
our local environment, from moving place to another and from enhancing our memory
and knowledge about directions.

3. Does navigation technology improve or impede our sense of direction and learning about where
we live?
• Answer:
I think this technology improves our sense of direction and learning about where we live
because these technologies have road navigations, logistics, and real-time positioning
data. But I also read that over dependence in such technologies will decrease our
cognitive abilities.
4. Compare and contrast the driving directions between two locations provided by two different
online mapping services (e.g., Google Maps vs. Yahoo! Maps). Is there a discrepancy? If so, what
explanations can you think of for this difference? Is this the best way to travel between these
locations?
• Answer:
The presentation of Yahoo! Maps is quite far from the Google Maps well-polished
driving directions. Google map have an accurate track record rather than Yahoo! Maps.
Google Maps is visual friendly compared to Yahoo! Maps. The explanation to the
differences is that Google maps is great in using colors, provides different viewpoints of
streets and has all sorts of remote area mapped down to the very last details.
