Tel: 4374560, 4372859, 4373421, Fax: 977-01-4373421Report on the Samples of Aggregate
Pikhuwa Khola Small Hydropower Project
4. General:
One sample each of Coarse Aggregate and Fine Aggregate were delivered to
this laboratory for conducting various tests in order to establish their suitability for
use as Coarse and Fine aggregate for concrete.
‘The project site is located at Bhojpur. The source of samples is Pikhuwa Khola
bank near powerhouse site
2. Coarse Aggregate: Comments on the results of tests are as follows:
2.1. Particle Size Distribution (Sieve Analysis)
When the result of the sieve analysis was compared with standard grading
requirement of ASTM: C- 33-01 for Coarse Aggregate, the sample, as it was
submitted, was found to be too coarse. Please refer to the sieve data and the
grading curve. The grading requirement can be met provided the aggregate are
screened in a screening plant. Screening can be done to produce the following
sizes of aggregate.
i) 40-20 mm Lot,
ii) 20-5 mm Lot
iil) Oversize size : > 40mm
‘The first two can be combined for nominal size of (40-5 mm) aggregate.
2.2. Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) and Los Angles Abrasion (LAA) Tests
‘These tests indicate the hardness of the rock products. The results are higher
then the maximum values generally permitted by various standards for use as
concrete aggregate.
ACV should be < 25% and LAA should be <35% for high grade concrete and
45% for low grade concrete. Obviously, these values will reflect on the crushing
strengths of concrete, Aggregate with higher values tend to be softer and usually
break earlier during the crushing of a concrete (cube or cylinder) specimen thus
lowering the strength of conerete.
However, for normal grade of concrete such as M20 or M 25, the required
strength may be achieved at the cost of higher cement content. However, the
result must be proved by carrying out trial mixing in the laboratory.
Generally, it is not necessary to carry out both ACV and LAA tests. American
Standards specify LAA test while the British standards specify ACV Test.Depending on the standards adopted for the project, whether American or British,
only one test can be specified
3. Fine Aggregate:
3.1. Particle size distribution (Sieve Analysis)
The fine aggregate in question is too fine as can be seen from the sieving data
and plots. It falls outside the grading limits of ASTM: C-33-Oton the finer side
The Fineness Modulus (F.M) is only 1.98. This should be between 2.15 ~ 3.40.
As stated earlier, the strength of concrete must be proved by trial mixing tests in
‘the laboratory if non-standard sand such as this sample is to be considered for
use as fine aggregate in concrete
3.2. Mica Content:
The mica content 9.23% is too high. Generally it should be around 1~2% or so.
Its effect on concrete will be to lower the strength.
4, Conclusion:
The coarse aggregate is too coarse and fine aggregate is too fine. Any
‘combination of coarse and fine aggregate will be gap-graded i. certain size of
particles, 10 mm — 2 mm in this case will be almost missing. This may not be a
serious problem. But then, the coarse aggregate has high abrasion and crushing
value while the sand has very high mica content. It is recommended to look for
alternative source, if available, Under the unavoidable circumstances, they may
be used for low grade concretes or mass concrete provided, as stated above,
trial mixings carried out in the laboratory at various cement contents can
establish mix proportions that can fulfil the requirements of the project
specifications. Alternatively, less important structures may be designed using low
grade concrete. For high-strength concrete such M30 or above alternative
sources must be explored,e Summaryeer | zr | sow | ezs | oo00 | ooo | wooo | - | - Jas | 26 |eve|s20] ex6]ses fooosfoon| - | - ) - facsassvous 2
