Vocabulary Clocks
This speaking activity can be used to review time and recently covered vocabulary.

Procedure

Draw the following clock on the board:

A, B, C
Y, Z D, E

W, X F, G

U, V H, I

S, T J, K

Q, R L, M

N, O, P

Write an example word on the board, e.g. elephant.

Explain that the first letter of the word is the hour hand, E = 1.
The last letter of the word is the minute hand, T = 40.

Therefore, elephant is 1:40 or twenty to two

You may wish to give a few more examples to check the students understand.

Next, divide the students into small teams. Call out words that you wish to review.

The first team to call out the correct time scores a point.

The team with the most points at the end wins the game.

Extension:

Make the activity more student-centered by having the students choose the words and call
them out.

Reverse the game. You call out a time and the students have to come up with a word that
starts and ends with those letters. The first team to do so wins a point.
