Next Week
In this class speaking activity, students make plans for next week and arrange times to meet
other members of the class. Students use the present continuous tense to talk about definite
arrangements in the future. This activity also covers language for talking about leisure
activities.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for every student in the class.

Procedure

Give a copy of the worksheet to each student.

Tell the class that this is a page out of their diary and that they are going to make some
arrangements for next week.

Ask each student to think of ten leisure activities they would like to do and to write them
down wherever they like in their diary.

Explain that at this point they should only write in the activity and leave the spaces marked
'with' and 'at' blank.

When they have done that, ask them to go round the class and find someone who is free to
do each of the activities with them. They should find a different person for each activity. They
should ask and answer like this:

Student A: What are you doing on Monday evening?

Student B: Nothing, I'm free.
Student A: Would you like to go swimming with me?
Student B: Yes, that sounds great.
Student A: OK, let’s meet at 7:30 p.m.

Or

Student A: What are you doing on Tuesday afternoon?

Student B: I’m playing football with Terry.
Student A: What about Saturday evening?
Student B: Nothing, I'm free then.

When Students A and B have agreed to do an activity together, they write one another’s
names and the time they have arranged to meet in the relevant place in their diaries.

The students repeat the activity until they have found someone for each leisure activity.

When everyone has finished, students tell the class about their plans for next week using the
present continuous.
