My Childhood
In this entertaining activity, students talk about their childhood using used to. Sometimes the
students invent information and sometimes they give real information. Their partner asks
follow-up questions to find out if their partner is lying or telling the truth.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each pair of students and cut as indicated.

Procedure

Divide the students into groups (A and B) and give each student the corresponding part of
the worksheet.

Read the instructions to the students and tell them to answer each question on their
worksheet with real or invented information as indicated.

When they have finished, tell the students to pair up with a member from the other group.

Demonstrate the activity by asking one of the students to tell you one of their answers, e.g. I
used to love playing chess when I was a child. Then ask several follow-up questions and
finally say whether you think the student is lying or telling the truth.

You could also create your own answer and get the students to ask you questions.

The students then begin the activity. Student A goes first and tells Student B about each
answer in turn. Then the students swap roles.

At the end of the activity, get feedback from some of the pairs to find out if they were good at
spotting when their partner was lying or telling the truth.
