Procedure
Introduction Time

• Begin the lesson by discussing the topic of poetry with the students 20 minutes
o What is poetry?
o What do you think of poetry? Do you like it?
o What are characteristics associated with poetry?
▪ Rhyme, etc.
o Would you consider Dr. Seuss a poet?
▪ Why or why not?
o Watch intro to poetry video (3 mins):

o Ask students after the video if they changed their mind on if Dr. Seuss
is a poet or not
• Tell the students that Dr. Seuss is a poet and his many children books are
examples of poetry
• Present the students the slideshow about Dr. Seuss (8 mins)
o Dr. Seuss biography
Body Time

• Begin examining Dr. Seuss books by reading the students the story “Green 30 minutes
Eggs and Ham” (5 mins)
• Ask students:
o What did you notice about Dr. Seuss’ writing style?
▪ Rhyme
▪ Rhythm
o What did you notice about the elements of the story?
▪ Are the characters human?
▪ Are the elements of the story realistic?
▪ What about the illustrations?
o Does the story have a meaning?
o What is the meaning?
• Hand out the Loosely Seuss project outline and go over the project with the
students
o Ensure the students are aware of the formative and summative due
dates
o Also go over the rubric with the students in order to solidify they
understand the expectations
Closure Time

• Students will complete an exit slip indicating one thing they learnt about 5 minutes
poetry, one thing they are want to learn about, and one question they have
about poetry or Dr. Seuss
