Candles are a very handy thing to know how to make. They can be economical for
those people who enjoy supplementing electricity. They add peace and tranquility to an
environment in the evenings. Homemade candles make great gifts. For a Catholic
family, they are used during prayer time. A red candle signifies what is physically and
spiritually Holy. For example, a red candle can be found next to a tabernacle in a
Catholic Church to signify the consecrated Eucharist housed within.

Making candles is easy. Wax, a wick, and a glass container are the basics. Types of
wax, wicks, and suitable containers can be explored. Recycling and upcycling should be
considered. Coloring can be added. The following is a suggested list of ingredients and
equipment to get started:
Candle wax
Candle wicks
Glass containers
An old metal pitcher or pan
A stove
Potholder
A “holder” for the candle wick
Essential oils for adding various scent combinations
I use an old metal pitcher placed in a double boiler configuration when melting my wax.
I melt wax with the stove burner set on a low setting. As the wax melts, I add a couple
squirts of essential oil to the melting wax. I set up my glass container and wick to
receive the melted wax. I carefully pour the wax into the glass container and let it cool. I
am careful about the surface I place my cooling candle on, so as not to ruin a counter
surface.
