Mechathon 2020-21

Organised by
MES - Mechanical Engineering Society
IIT Delhi

Overview -

In this Mechathon, you will assume the role of a leading industrial and mechanical
engineer. Your task is to design a manufacturing supply chain from a given set of
raw materials.

Problem Statement -
You are given a 20x20x10 meter cubic room. You have to convert that room into a
fully functional manufacturing supply chain to give a final finished product.

The product - A SCREWDRIVER

Specifications -

1. The raw materials that are being provided to you are steel and plastic.
1.1. 0.375 inch in diameter steel wire coils
1.2. Cellulose acetate pellets
2. You may assume the type and quality of these materials based on your
requirements. (assume that the materials are initially free of defects)
3. You supply chain must be capable of manufacturing at least 3 different types
of screwdrivers which must include the following -
3.1. Slotted head
3.2. Phillips head
3.3. Square head
3.4. You may manufacture additional variants however, points will be awarded
only in the case of an exceptional implementation
4. You may assume that the walls of the room are sturdy enough to withstand
any sort of load, however, you must specify how much load is approximately
being exerted on the walls due to your mechanisms.
5. There should be a minimum of one and at max two input areas for raw
material into the room. You must specify their location. You can also provide a
detailed floor plan of your room.
6. There should be a minimum of three exit outlets in the room for your three
different types of variants. Add an additional outlet for each additional variant.
7. The manufacturing and removal of defective products should all take place in
the same room (with dimensions specified above).

Guidelines and submission-

1. You have to submit a single zip file with all your materials.
2. The zip file must contain a readme.txt with -
2.1. A table of contents - Specify the title of each file and a short one/two-line
summary of what that file contains
2.2. A file wise reference table - Specify the online/offline sources you took
help from separately for each file.
2.2.1. Plagiarism will lead to severe points penalty and/or
disqualification.
2.2.2. Ensure that your reference links are specific. We do not want to
see google images or www.google.com as a reference.
3. You must also create a short presentation (ppt) of 10 slides (at max) walking us
through your entire implementation/supply chain.
3.1. This is the first thing and final thing we will judge.
3.2. This is the Presentation you will be presenting if shortlisted for the final
round.
3.3. You may insert Screenshots/images and videos in your presentation
3.4. Refer to the judging criteria for more information about the presentation.
4. All submissions must be sent to mechathon.iitdelhi@gmail.com with the
subject as - “Mechathon Submission - <team name>”
5. The deadline for submission is 11:59 am, Thursday 29th October, 2020
6. The final round presentations will take place on Saturday 31st October, 2020

Judging Criteria-
1. Originality - 10
2. Relevance to the statement - 10
3. Scalability of the idea - 10
3.1. Try to ensure your solution is modular and can be scaled up to be
implemented in larger workspaces
4. CAD Models - 10
4.1. Providing CAD models along with a detailed description of your
implementation will strengthen your solution.
4.2. You may use the following CAD Softwares -
4.2.1. Autodesk Inventor
4.2.2. Autodesk Fusion
4.2.3. Solidworks
4.2.4. Blender 3D
5. Calculations - 10 points
5.1. Provide the mathematics behind their production rate and criteria
for recognizing defects
6. Presentation - 20
6.1. The final presentation must be in .ppt format. .
6.2. During the final presentation, you will not be allowed to cycle
between various different files in your submission folder.
6.2.1. Those files are for judging you separately.
6.2.2. Hence it is recommended that you insert any and all relevant
media content in the presentation in the form of a
screenshot/picture and screen-recording/video
6.3. You will be given at max 15 minutes to present your entire
presentation. Any additional time will lead to a point penalty.
6.4. Bonus Points - 10
6.4.1. More than 3 variants
6.4.2. Coating of screwdriver by No/Cr metal
6.4.3. Miscellaneous
