Solution of Quadratic Equations Using the Quadratic Formula

If 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0, then

−𝒃 ± √𝒃𝟐 − 𝟒𝒂𝒄
𝒙=

The formula above is the quadratic formula. This can be used to solve any given
quadratic equation. However, the quadratic equation must first be arranged in
the general form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0.

1. Solve the following quadratic equations using the quadratic formula.

a. 𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝟕𝒙 + 𝟐 = 𝟎
First, identify 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐
𝑎 = 3, 𝑏 = −7 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐 = 2
Next, substitute these values into the formula
−(−7) ± √(−7)2 − 4(3)(2)

b. 3𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 25 = 0

Hence, the solutions are 𝑥 = 1.85 and 𝑥 = −4.52 (2 𝑑. 𝑝)
c. Solve the quadratic equation 𝑦 2 + 𝑦 − 6 = 0

Solution

Proving the answers

𝑦2 + 𝑦 − 6 = 0

When 𝑦 = −3

(−3)2 + (−3) − 6 = 0

9−3−6=0

When 𝑦 = 2

22 + 2 − 6 = 0
Sir Collins

4+2−6=0

0=0

Hence, the answers are correct.

Note that in order to use the quadratic formula, the equation must

first be written as 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 𝟎.

Exercise

Solve the following quadratic equations using the quadratic formula

1. 3(𝑥 + 2)2 = 7(𝑥 + 2)

(𝑥 + 2)2 = (𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 + 2)
3(𝑥 + 2)2 = 7(𝑥 + 2)
Remove the square
3(𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 + 2) = 7(𝑥 + 2)
Remove the brackets by multiplication
3[𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 4] = 7𝑥 + 14
3[𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 4] = 7𝑥 + 14
3𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 + 12 = 7𝑥 + 14
Now write the equation in the form 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 𝟎
(Group everything on the left-hand side)
3𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 7𝑥 + 12 − 14 = 0
3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2 = 0

(3𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 5) = 4𝑥 + 3
3𝑥 (𝑥 ) + 3𝑥 (5) − 1(𝑥 ) − 1(5) = 4𝑥 + 3
3𝑥 2 + 15𝑥 − 𝑥 − 5 = 4𝑥 + 3
3𝑥 2 + 14𝑥 − 5 = 4𝑥 + 3
3𝑥 2 + 14𝑥 − 4𝑥 − 5 − 3 = 0

4. (2𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 7) = 4(𝑥 − 7)

(2𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 7) = 4(𝑥 − 7)
2𝑥 (𝑥 ) − 2𝑥 (7) + 3(𝑥 ) − 3(7) = 4𝑥 − 28
2𝑥 2 − 14𝑥 + 3𝑥 − 21 = 4𝑥 − 28
2𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 − 21 = 4𝑥 − 28
2𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 − 4𝑥 − 21 + 28 = 0
