Personal Screenplay
writing
Here is the synopsis and first page of a work in progress Screenplay I am writing - Personal
project (December 2020)

Synopsis:

Nicolo is a 14-year-old boy from Italy who has moved with his family to a coastal town in southern England.
He has short messy blonde hair and brown eyes. Both him and his family (His Mother, father and sister) share
a great fondness for the ocean and decided they wanted to live as close as they could to it when they moved
to England. Due to their closeness to the ocean Nicolo is often visiting it on his own to find interesting shells/
sea creatures. One evening when Nicolo is searching for his treasures he finds a beautiful and intriguing fish
like he had never seen before. He decides to bring it home which leads to his life getting a lot stranger. Mys-
teriously Nicolo starts to gain fishlike features and a craving for saltwater. When Nicolo starts noticing these
changes he decides to search for a cure and clues as to what’s happening. Within the search he makes new
friends and also realisations about himself.

OCEAN (Working title)

We see a young boy, NICOLO, walking along the beach. The BEACH
doesn’t span very far as it is part of a wider beach. The smaller
beach and the larger beach are separated by a large stream of water.
The beach is near to the town so the only things surrounding it are
grassy slopes and stone stairs. Nicolo is holding a yellow plastic
bucket and is picking up various shells and objects and putting them
in it as he walks. Nicolo is a short 14-year-old Italian boy with
short, messy blonde hair. He is wearing a puffy blue jacket and
green shorts. His hands and face are white due to the cold weather.
The beach is mostly empty except for a few families and couples. The
scene is set at sunset and as the scene progresses the lighting gets
darker. Nicolo walks closer to the shore.
1.EXT. THE BEACH - DAY
NICOLO
(To himself)
huh... What was that?
Nicolo crouches down as he notices a shiny object in the water.
NICOLO
Is that a fish? All the way out here?! … Is it dead?
A sudden large wave appears. Nicolo is shocked by the wave, he
stumbles backwards and falls.
NICOLO
Ah, no... what’s mum gonna say about this. I’m soaking!
Nicolo looks up from his clothes and looks at the fish is now out of
the water and flopping about in the sand.
NICOLO
(Shouting)
AAAHHH! It’s alive.
Nicolo walks closer to where the fish is lying.

NICOLO
Well, you probably won’t be for long if you just lie there... Here.
Nicolo tips out his bucket and the assortment of shells and objects
he found scatter on to the floor. He then walks closer to the shore
and fills the bucket with sea water. He walks back over to the fish,
picks it up and then carefully puts it in the bucket. He then sits
down and places the bucket on his lap.
NICOLO
Let's see if this works
Nicolo sits and stares into the bucket. After a few seconds the fish
starts swimming around.
NICOLO
(To the fish)
AHA you are alive! ...Now what do I do with you. Hmm, if I was
strong enough, I’d throw you back into the ocean, you know? like the
fishermen do, but I can’t throw that far.
Nicolo puts his finger to his chin.
NICOLO
I know! You could be my pet! I’ve got an aquarium at home and it’s
empty, you can stay in it if you want!
NICOLO
(In his head, pretending to be the fish)
Yes Nicolo I’d love to!
Nicolo smiles. He then gets up and walks back home.
Film Screenwriting
The brief was to write a segment of a short film focusing on a big narrative change.

4. INT. THE DINING ROOM - NIGHT

Percy and Finley are sitting at the table. The light in the room is weak so only the table can be
seen, and the rest is in shadows.

PERCY
Reports of a predator? What does that have to do with my dog?

FINLEY
I’m just saying since you lost her in the woods it’s not unlikely that she’s trying to find food.

PERCY
I… I guess you’re right. But why wouldn’t she just come home? We’ve had her for a month
now, so she’d know that there’s food here.

FINLEY
(Grinning)
I don’t know. Maybe she’s just returning to her primal instincts, you know, becoming a wolf
again.

PERCY
What? Finley this isn’t a time for jokes! My dog is missing… Or dead! Maybe this... predator
has got her! And you’re making jokes?!

FINLEY
Mate… She is the predator! Your dog is a murderous beast!

PERCY
Get. Out.
Film Analysis
In the film studies class we also had the chance
to analyse different sequence’s from films.

Pan’s Labyrinth (Essay written in 2019 (AS Level))

“Del-Toro uses Mise-en-scene in Pan’s Labyrinth to convey subliminal messages and to help us better un-
derstand the characters. The opening sequence introduces the character’s and displays their personality.
After the first scene of the film where we see Ophelia dying, we are properly introduced to Ophelia and her
mother. One element of mise-en-scene in this sequence is their costumes. Ophelia and Carmen are wearing
green dresses this could be showing that they are part of the fantasy world as green is a colour associated with
magic and fantasy. The green dresses could also represent the bond between Carmen and her Mother and the
growth that both are experiencing, Carmen with her baby and Ophelia as a person.”

This is England (Essay written in 2019 (AS Level))

“Another way Shaun is represented is as a lonely character. We see the way Shaun feels through the cine-
matography and mise-en-scene used. Shaun’s repeatedly placed off the centre of the frame and is usually quite
small. This represents Shaun’s feelings about himself and how most other people see him showing that he
feels lonely and unimportant. Another way this is represented is through the camera movement. The camera
is never following Shaun showing that he is not important to most other people and as the viewer you feel
like you should be focusing on something else because of how the camera moves.”

Wild Tales (Essay Written in 2020 (A2 Level))

“Another scene within this film where a lot of meaning is created is the end scene. In the climatic over head
shot of the mafia leaders’ dead body at the end we see a pool of red blood. The amount of the frame the blood
takes up makes it clear to the viewer what has happened and makes them also consider the climax of the
events more deeply. In the end shot we see the waitress sitting next to the mafia leaders son. This use of place-
ment conveys the relationship between these two characters and makes the viewer think about the connec-
tion between them.”

La La Land (Essay written in 2020 (A2 Level))

“Later in the film we visit Mia’s place of work, The Warner Brother’s lot. This scene uses a combination of
active and passive spectatorship to engage the spectating selves of the viewer and display them within the
characters. In this scene we see Mia state that the window across the road from her work is the famed one
from Casablanca. We get a low angle shot, similar to the one in Casablanca, that shows Mia and Seb looking
up to it. This part engages the cultural self within the spectator who has seen Casablanca and allows them to
have a deeper connection with Mia and Seb who also share the cultural understanding of this moment. This
is a moment that encourages active viewing as the reference is one that engages the viewer. As Mia and Seb
walk around the Warner Brothers lot they walk past the set of a film. As they pass it there is a wide angle that
celebrates the process of filming and clearly shows Mia and Seb enjoying witnessing it. Due to the wide angle
I’d say that this scene is more passive as it shows Mia and Seb revealing their private selves and how they re-
late to what their watching. Due to the film being watched is a text-within-a-text it’s difficult for the spectator
to relate themselves to it so it’s more of a passive moment.”
Storyboards
After finishing the screenplay’s we made Storyboards based on them.

The Jungle house

The project, with its solar panels, gardens and
pond for edible perch, was designed in response
to the climate emergency to be a model for more
sustainable urban living.

A complete roof structure was designed to hold

all the drainage for the open-air pond and
planters for beds of fruit and vegetables.

Nitrogen-rich wastewater from the fishpond,

which is located between the home's outer
facade and inner skin on the first floor, irrigates
and fertilisers the garden. Rainwater drains into
an underground tank, is filtered
and pumped back up to the pond.
Welcome to The Jungle House was built on the
site of a derelict house. The project involved
demolishing the original building and building
a new home on the wedge-shaped site.

At the front, the spackle-rendered facade was

heritage area. A more modern panel-style facade

"But with a lot of collaboration between

our plumber, landscaper, home automation,
irrigation and weather-sensor contractors we were able to
ensure the system was set up fully integrated without any
major setbacks."

Sadly, climate change may have already negatively affected

the house's aquaponics system.

"The system has been set up so that the residents can indeed
harvest and eat the fish when they've grown to a big enough
size," CplusC Architectural Workshop told Arktitekt.

"Unfortunately during Australia's catastrophic bushfires

earlier this year a layer of ash settled on the open tank and
all the fish died," explained the studio. "We have to wait until mid-spring to be able to reintroduce fish to the system,
so the opportunity for harvesting the fully-grown fish is yet to happen!"
