Mid Span Tension Joint

1 Scope
This specification covers the requirements of the mid span tension joint which shall be
used for jointing conductors such as ACSR, AAAC, AAC and ACS (Aluminum-clad steel
stranded conductor) on overhead transmission line.

2 Normative references

2.1 Applicable standards


All mid span tension joints supplied shall, in general, comply with the latest edition of
following international standards:
(a) IEC 61089: Round wire concentric lay overhead electrical stranded conductors
(b) IEC 61284: Overhead lines - Requirements and tests for fittings
(c) ISO 209-1: Wrought aluminum and aluminum alloys - Chemical composition and
forms of products - Part 1: Chemical composition
(d) ISO 630: Structural steels - Plates, wide flats, bars, sections and profiles
(e) ISO 1460: Metallic coatings - Hot dip galvanized coating on ferrous materials -
Gravimetric determination of the mass per unit area
(f) ISO 1461: Hot dip galvanized coating on fabricated iron and steel articles -
Specifications and test methods
(g) ISO 2859-1: Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes - Part 1: Introduction to
the ISO 2859 attribute sampling system

2.2 Alternative standards


The supplier may propose alternative standards provided it is proven that it gives an
equivalent degree of quality as applicable standards. But the acceptance of the alternative
standard is limited to GECOL for approval.

2.3 Precedence of standards


In case of discrepancy between this specification and any of the applicable standards, the
following order of precedence shall apply:
(a) Technical specification of GECOL

3 Definition

3.1 Minimum slip load


Minimum load specified by the purchaser or declared by the supplier at which slippage
will not take place

3.2 Mean coating mass


The average value of the coating masses determined either by using a control sample
selected in accordance with Clause 5 using tests in accordance with ISO 1460 or
conversion of the mean coating thickness

3.3 Lot
A group of articles offered for acceptance from the same manufacturer, of the same
design and manufactured under presumed similar conditions of production. One or more
lots may be offered together for acceptance; the lot(s) offered may consist of the whole, or
part, of the quantity ordered

4 Kinds
The kinds of mid span tension joint are listed in Table 1 of this specification. Applicable
conductor is the conductor made in accordance with IEC 60189.

5 Requirements
The mid span tension joint shall be of the full tension type suitable for mid span tension
jointing ACSR, AAC, AAAC and earth wire (ACS : Aluminum-clad steel stranded
conductor). The detailed dimensions shall conform to the requirements shown in Figure 1
and 2 of this specification. Mid span tension joint shall conform to the physical and
mechanical requirements as follows.

5.1 Material

5.1.1 Mid span tension joint for earth wire (ACS)


The mid span tension joint shall be made from stainless steel.

5.1.2 Mid span tension joint for ACSR


The mid span tension joint shall be basically consisted of aluminum tube made from

extruded aluminum in accordance with ISO 209-1 and steel tube made from galvanized
steel in accordance with ISO 630.

5.1.3 Mid span tension joint for AAC/AAAC


The mid span tension clamp shall be made from high strength aluminum in accordance
with ISO 209-1.

5.2 Mechanical property


The mid span tension joint shall not break and slip at a load lower than 95% of the rated
tensile strength of the relevant conductor.

5.3 Hot-dip galvanizing


The outer surface of steel tube shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ISO 1460.
The mean coating mass shall be not less than 395g/m2 in accordance with ISO 1461.

5.4 Design requirements


The mid span tension joint shall be designed so as to meet the following requirements;
(a) The whole surface of mid span tension joint shall be smooth and free from blemishes,
malformations or any protrusion.
(b) The mid span tension joint shall be designed so as to have conductivity not less than
those of relevant conductor.
(c) Resistance of mid span tension joint shall be less than those of the equivalent length of
relevant conductor.
(d) The mid span tension joint shall be of the tubular type, used to joint two conductors of
same size.
(e) For AAC, AAAC, ACS and ACSR having a single strand of steel wire, the mid span
tension joint shall be a single part fitting. In case of single part fitting, the mid span
tension joint shall be provided with a center stop indent for correctly positioning of
conductor before compression. For ACSR with multi-stranded steel wires, the mid
span tension joint shall be two parts fitting of aluminum and steel tube and the steel
tube shall be provided with a center stop indent for correctly positioning of conductor
before compression.
(f) The both ends of mid span tension joint shall be covered with stopper to prevent the
ingression of a contaminant.
(g) The suitable connecting compound to insert in aluminum tube being packed with other
tool shall be supplied with mid span tension joint.
(h) Dimensional tolerance in which the tolerance is not specified shall be ±0.7mm for up
to and including 35mm in dimension and over 35mm, ±2%.
(i) The mid span tension joint shall have an indelible mark of starting and finishing point

to compress on surface of aluminum and steel tube.

6 Tests
The supplier shall carry out the Type tests, Sample tests and Routine tests in accordance
with the latest edition of IEC 61284 and as specified in this specification.
All mid span tension joints are to be checked for compliance with this specification and
with the ordering quantity. GECOL reserves the rights to ask for tests to confirm the
quality of mid span tension joint in the presence of GECOL representatives.
All test reports of the below defined and executed tests shall be submitted to GECOL for
approval within one week after the completion of the tests.

6.1 Sampling
Test specimens shall be selected at random from each inspection lot (or articles) in
accordance with ISO 2859-1. The number of samples selected from each lot shall comply
with Table 2 of this specification.

Resistance shall conform to the requirements specified in clause 5.4 of this
specification.

6.3 Retest
If only one sample fail to comply with the sample tests, a new sample equal to twice the
quantity of originally submitted to that test shall be subjected to re-testing. If two or more
samples fail to comply with any of the sample tests, or if any failure occurs during re-
testing, the complete lot is considered as not complying with this specification and shall be
withdrawn by manufacturer.

7 Marking
Marking shall ensure the system of traceability for each component of the fittings. The
marks shall be indelibly embedded on suitable position. The characters shall be English
capital roman letters and Arabic numeral characters. The manufacture shall mark as
follows;
(a) Identification of fittings
(b) Manufacturer’s identification
(c) Year of manufacture
(d) Applicable conductor size or code name
(e) Compression starting and finishing point
(f) Number of compression and dies reference

8 Packing and Delivery


The supplier shall provide packing of the mid span tension joint as is required to prevent
their damage or deterioration during transit to their final destination and long period of
storage. The packing shall be sufficient to withstand, without limitation, rough handling
during transportation and the exposure to extreme temperatures, salt and precipitation.
(a) All mid span tension joints shall be delivered from the factory to the specified site or
GECOL warehouse.
(b) Every 100 or some reasonable pieces of the mid span tension joints shall be packaged
in a stout wood box being packaged with waterproof package.
(c) Each shipment, if necessary, shall include a detailed packing list identifying all items
by part number in a waterproof envelope.
(d) All mid span tension joints shall be carefully loaded for protection during
transportation.
On the package, a name plate shall be attached being not detachable and indelibly shall
include the appropriate items as the designation and dimension or quantity of product,
gross weight, the name and trade mark of supplier, etc. The characters shall be English
capital roman letters and Arabic numeral characters. The size of characters shall not be less

than 4mm.

9 Document and certificate


The mid span tension joint quoted by the supplier shall be approved by GECOL. The
quantity of document and certificates submitted shall be not less than three copies. The mid
span tension joint shall conform to the latest edition of applicable standards including
clause 2 of this specification or any other equivalent international standards. The design
and construction of mid span tension joint shall be subjected to the approval of GECOL.

9.1 Information to be provided with the BID


Technical descriptions, data sheets, catalogues and other information shall be submitted
with the BID and those which are submitted shall be sufficient to enable GECOL to
evaluate thoroughly the proposal as to its compliance with the requirements of this
specification.
The minimum requirement is as follows:
(a) Detailed summary of difference with this specification
(b) Technical Data Sheet duly filled in and signed (Annex A)
(c) Material safety data certificates and the table of component ratio of all chemical
materials or metal used for manufacturing
(d) Detailed cross-sectional drawing & plane figure of all components in A3 or A4 size
(e) Detailed handling, installation and maintenance manual for good operation
(f) Brochures and catalogues containing outline dimensions, main electrical and
mechanical data, etc.
(g) Applicable design specification and standards in English language
(h) Test certificates approved by international institute
(i) Quality control system and relevant certificate

9.2 Documents to be approved by GECOL


The supplier shall furnish all relevant technical information, drawings etc. to GECOL
for approval prior to the start of manufacture. Offers without Technical Data Sheet
completely filled in will be rejected.

(e) Drawings of materials (All drawings shall be in A3 or A4 size with title block

9.3 Documentation
All documents supplied under this specification shall be documented to the extent that
the end user can easily understand its theory of operation, performance, installation and
maintenance for the product. All documents shall be submitted being filed in order to
approve of GECOL and reorder later.
Language in all documents and drawings shall be written in English and dimensions
shall be used in metric SI-units.

10 Warranty
The supplier shall provide a full one-year limited warranty on all articles supplied. The
warranty shall cover all parts and all costs, which are directly attributable to the supplier.
Warranty coverage shall begin on the date that the articles are received.
