We will first read in Romans chapter 5 verse 12. “Wherefore,
as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
During this time regarding the substitution, one of the things
the Lord gave in this Word is the union between us and the Lord Jesus Christ. Within substitution is union. Within substitution, there is the meaning of the union between man and the Lord Jesus Christ. In Romans chapter 5 verse 12, Jesus said every person is responsible for sin in Adam and they die because of the sin of Adam. In other words, the responsibility of sin came to us in Adam. This is saying they died after the sin of Adam and they received salvation through Christ. Also in Romans chapter 5 verse 19 that we know very well, “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”Many became sinners by one man’s disobedience. Likewise, many became righteous by one man’s obedience. Now, to explain this, all of mankind was in Adam and Adam’s corruption became everyone’s corruption. That is what the Bible is saying. Adam’s corruption became everyone’s corruption. Everyone in Christ, when the Lord died, they all died. What is this? It was done together. The Lord and we united. This substitution talks about how we are together.
Let’s go over to Romans chapter 6. There is a wonderful word.
Why don’t we read chapter 6 verse 3? “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” The parts that you should see here in verse 3 are the parts on “into”. “Many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death.” We were together with him. Next is verse 4, “By baptism into death.” It says “into” again. “We are buried with him.”The words “into” and “with him” are speaking of union. Verse 5, “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”It said they are together. If we are together in the likeness of the death of Jesus, we are also together in the likeness of his resurrection. If we are together in the likeness of death, we are also together in the likeness of the resurrection. This is what this is saying. If we continue on with this word until verse 8, it says here, “Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.”It says “with him”. Let’s settle this. It’s saying that we are in Christ. We are a part of the Lord and we are one with the Lord. That is why we are identified with the Lord.
Next, just as we were in Adam, we are in Christ. We became
sinners in Adam and just as we were in Adam, we are in Christ. If you look in 1Corinthians chapter 15 verse 22, these parts are told to us very clearly. It’s a great word on the resurrection. Let’s look at 1Corinthians chapter 15 verse 22. It’s 1Corinthians chapter 15 verse 22, “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” We say that this is the great word on resurrection. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” The Lord is someone who works for us. We died with the Lord. Then we live with the Lord. We abide in the Lord and we belong to the Lord. Just as we died in Adam, we die with the Lord in Christ, we live with the Lord, we abide in the Lord, and we belong to the Lord. That is what it’s telling us.
Next, there is freedom in substitution. The Lord’s death freed
us from the Law. It freed us from the Law. If we take a look in the Bible, the Lord’s substitution freed us from the Law. Next, it freed us from the Law. This is the meaning it holds. As we know, if we look at Romans chapter 6 verse 14, why don’t we look at it? It’s Romans chapter 6 verse 14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”It says here, “For sin shall not have dominion over you.” It’s because we are not under the law, but under grace. The Lord saved us from the Law. We are not under the Law for sin to have no dominion over us. The Law had dominion over us because we are under the Law, but we were saved from the Law. In Romans chapter 7, the Lord explained to us by comparing these things to a married woman. We were compared to a married woman. The woman is bound to her husband as long as the husband is alive to the husband’s law. But when the husband dies, the woman is free from her husband. Likewise, this is saying we were bound to the Law. We were bound to the Law, but we were freed through the death of Christ. The woman is bound to the husband’s law when the husband is alive, but she is free from her husband when he dies. In the same way, we were bound to the Law, but we were freed from the Law through the death of Christ. This is truly an amazing word. The substitution of Christ not only liberated us from the Law, but it freed us from the Law. We are no longer bound to the Law. We are free from the Law and we are liberated from the Law. We are now free. We are free and liberated because of the death of Jesus Christ.
Next, we will look in 2Corinthians chapter 5 which speaks of
this more clearly. It’s 2Corinthians chapter 5 verse 19, “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” It says here, “Reconciling unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”If we look here, our trespasses were not imputed on us. If you look here, when people commit sin, sin is imputed on them. Why? It’s imputed on them because they sinned. However, this is an amazing word that our trespasses are no longer imputed on us. “Was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them.” Because I committed sin, it’s natural that the sins I committed are imputed on me. Why? It’s because that sin was committed by me. Because we committed sin, it’s natural that that sin is imputed on us. But the Bible is saying that our trespasses are no longer imputed on us. The reason why our trespasses are not imputed on us is because of this amazing word “not imputing their trespasses unto them”. It’s because the Lord became sin for us. Jesus became sin for us. Because Jesus became sin for us, God passed over our sins to Christ. In other words, God passed all of our sins over to Jesus Christ. Then Jesus became sin.To be more specific, it becomes Jesus’ sin. Because our trespasses are no longer imputed on us, but on Christ, God punished our trespasses in Christ. Because our trespasses were imputed on Jesus and passed over to him, God punished our trespasses in Christ and they are no longer our trespasses because our trespasses were passed over to Jesus. Because our trespasses went over to Jesus, those trespasses are no longer ours.It was passed over to Jesus and Jesus became sin. That is why God had to punish Jesus and judge him. Our sin is no longer our sin. The righteousness of His Son was passed over. Isn’t this expression wonderful? Our sins were passed over to Jesus and the righteousness of the Son of God was passed over to us. It was switched, right? Our sins were passed over to Jesus and the righteousness of the Son of God was passed over to us. This is truly amazing; to become the righteousness of God. Jesus became sin by bearing our sins; he was sin. On the other hand, the righteousness of God in Christ, the righteousness of the Son of God passed over to us. That is why we are righteous. This is truly an amazing word.
Why don’t we also look in Galatians chapter 2? Let’s look at
Galatians chapter 2 from verse 19, “For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”What did God show us here? Concerning the Law, we are dead to the Law. Why? It’s because we might live to God. We died to the Law that we might live. Because of what Christ had done, we died with Christ. Christ made us free from the Law. We were crucified with the Lord, we are dead to the Law through the Law, we died with Christ for this work, and now we live with Christ. This is saying that Christ made us free from the Law. Let’s turn to Galatians chapter 3 and look at verse 13 which tells this specifically. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”The curse of the Law. The Law judges sin and condemns sin. It condemns sin, right? But Christ received the curse. I was supposed to receive the curse, but Jesus received all the curse instead as my substitute. That is why we are free from that curse, and we are redeemed and saved from the curse of the Law. Christ received the curse for us. He redeemed and saved us from the curse of the Law. This is saying the Lord saved us from all the punishment that comes from the Law, all the punishment due to the responsibility of sin and our sins, and the curse.
I am currently lecturing on the substitution that happened on
the cross. Within this substitution, he saved us, freed us, and liberated us from the Law. He freed us and liberated us from all punishment of the Law and all curse of the Law. Such amazing word is in there. Next, the third thing is we will look in Acts chapter 2. It’s Acts chapter 2 verse 23, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.”God the Father is involved in all the works of the substitution that occurred at the cross. If you look here, this substitution, this plan of salvation that occurred at the cross was planned by God the Father and He was involved. God the Father planned this, was involved, and He accomplished it. “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God.” Even sending the Lord to the cross was the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. God already decided this. Sending Jesus Christ to the cross was the plan and will of God the Father. So, if we look here, it was the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God even before the foundation of the world for the Lord to bear the cross. That is why the Bible said, “Him, being delivered.” Jesus was delivered and this was allowed by God.This word is in 1Peter chapter 1. It’s 1Peter chapter 1 verse 20, “Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”“Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world.”It means crucifying Christ, the Son of God, was foreordained before the foundation of the world. So, the work of redeeming our sins was foreordained before the foundation of the world.
Next is Revelation chapter 13 verse 8. These parts are clearly
spoken here. It’s chapter 13 verse 8, “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”Already before the foundation of the world, the names in the book of life of the Lamb were written after the foundation of the world. God knew that all the sins of man would be covered by Jesus Christ His only begotten Son. That is why it says here that the names were not written after the foundation of the world. The Lord already knew that the names would be written into the book of life after the foundation of the world.
If you look in Isaiah chapter 53 verse 6, the Bible is saying that
the salvation and redemption that occurred at the cross on Calvary was planned and accomplished by God. Like an episode in a drama, God wrote the script and God accomplished it as it is. That is what the Bible is saying. That great testimony concerning Jesus is in Isaiah chapter 53 verse 6, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”The one who did this work at Calvary was God. “The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” The Lord planned this and the Lord did this work at the cross on Calvary. When the Lord bore the cross, the Lord cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He said, “If possible, let this cup pass from me, but let it be done according to your will and your wants.” According to this Lord, it was planned. The Lord did that work on the cross to lay on him the iniquity of us all. This word is also in John chapter 3 verse 16 that we all know. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” He gave up His Son to the death on the cross. God is the one who gave up His Son to the cross. Salvation is accomplished in Jesus Christ. God is the one who planned this and gave up His Son. That is what this is saying. There are many such things and we will look for a few more. Why is this important? The plan of salvation was accomplished by God. Should we describe it like that? It’s God’s piece of work. God planned it, decided it, and all of it was accomplished by His will. It’s Romans chapter 3 verse 25, “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.”“Through the forbearance of God, in his blood.” If you look here, “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood.”God set Jesus Christ to be a propitiation through faith in his blood. God did it and God accomplished it. Next is Romans chapter 8 verse 32. I think this is also a gracious word. It’s Romans chapter 8 verse 32, “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”“He that spared not his own Son.” It’s saying that God didn’t spare His own Son. Why? He gave him up to the cross for us. God is the one who did this amazing work. God didn’t spare His own Son. Why? He didn’t spare His own Son, but delivered him for all sinners. That is God’s wonderful love and amazing work. “He that spared not his own Son.” He didn’t spare him. Why don’t we look at another word?
Next, how wonderful is His love? Let’s look at 2Corinthians
chapter 5 verses 18 and 19, “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”It says, “All things are of God.” All the incidents and works that happened on the cross are of God. God was in Christ. “Reconciling the world unto himself.” What we know is that all things are of God, He reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and He gave us the ministry of reconciliation. There is one thing we can see here. The one who is doing this work is God. The eternal God the Father did this work at the cross through Christ. The cross was not simply an incident. The eternal God the Father planned this and accomplished it. He’s doing the work through the cross of Christ. God is doing what with Himself and reconciling? God planned Christ and sent Christ to reconcile us who were sinners to Him. God was in Christ to reconcile. He reconciled the world to Himself and He didn’t impute their trespasses on them. The important thing here is that God didn’t impute our trespasses on us. He imputed them on Jesus Christ by reconciling with us.
Let’s look in 2Corinthians chapter 5 verse 21. It’s 2Corinthians
chapter 5 verse 21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”This is truly an amazing word. Why don’t we organize this part? God is someone who doesn’t know sin. Who is this? The one who doesn’t know sin is Jesus. Jesus Christ bore our sins in our place because God made Christ into sin. Concerning all the sins we committed, God didn’t make us into sin, but He made Christ into sin. God made Christ into sin. God passed over all our responsibility for sin to Christ. It went over. That is what this is. Next, God laid our sins on Christ. The important thing here is that God punished sin in Christ. Because God made Christ into sin and passed our responsibility for sin over to Christ, because our sins were laid on Christ, God had to punish that sin in Christ. That is the cross. All our punishment on sin was poured upon Christ. That is why we are free from all sin and all laws. We are free from the Law because we are free from sin. So, if we look here, the truly amazing thing is verse 21. In 2Corinthians chapter 5 verse 21, because Jesus was made to be sin for us, our sins passed over to Jesus, and the righteousness of Jesus Christ and the righteousness of God came to us that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Jesus became our sin and we became the righteousness of God as the righteousness of God came to us through Jesus Christ. This is amazing.
All in all, every theory and concept on substitution can be said
in a word – this was done by God the Father. God the Father planned it, God the Father accomplished it, and God the Father was involved. Why? He wanted to reconcile with us. He passed over all our sins to Christ and made Christ into sin. The righteousness of Christ which has the righteousness of God came to us and we were made into righteousness. For us to unite and reconcile with God, God planned this and accomplished it all. This is the most amazing part on substitution. All our sins were passed over to Jesus and Jesus became sin. Because he was made into sin, he had to receive all the punishment for the responsibility for sin. Jesus received that punishment. The righteousness of God in God became ours through Jesus Christ. We were made into God’s righteousness. We became God’s righteousness in them. Then we became God’s what? We became God’s righteousness.
Through this lecture, through the words on substitution, God’s
righteousness was given to us and this amazing salvation which became God’s righteousness, this unspeakable grace is inside of us and I believe it will make us blessed.
