Determine the maximum stress of the plain

concrete.
• f = My/I
• I = bh3 / 12
• y=h/2
• f = M (0.5h) / (bh3/12)
• f = 6 M / bh2

Determine the location of neutral axis from

the topmost fiber.
• Moment of Area above the N.A. equals
the Moment of Area below the N.A.
• (b kd) (kd /2 ) = n As (d – kd)
• (1/2) b k2 d2 = n As (1 – k) d
• (1/2) b k2 d = n As (1 – k)
• If ρ = As / bd, then
• k2 + 2nρ k – 2nρ = 0
k = [(nρ )1/2 (nρ + 2 )1/2 ] – nρ

Determine the Moment due to concrete

• Mconc = C jd
• Where: C = (volume of the concrete
stress block)
• C= (1/2) (fc kd) (b)
• jd = moment arm
• jd = d – kd/3
• Thus:
Mconc = (1/2) fc k (1- k/3) bd2

Determine the Moment due to steel

• Msteel = T jd
• Where: T = Tensile force = steel stress x steel area
• T = As fs
• jd = moment arm
• jd = d – kd/3
• Thus:
Msteel = As fs jd

Summary.

• It’s important to have a good understanding of these

stresses because any design or analysis of a beam will
involve calculating them.
• Flexural Formula: fb = My/I
• In the elastic behavior of reinforced concrete beam, the
basic flexural formula is handy.
• In the Working Stress Design method, the uncracked and
cracked sections of the beam is analyzed considering the
transformed section of the RC beam, using modular
ratio, n.
