About GERUND: How to form V+ing

1) basic: walk, jump, read >> walking, jumping, reading

2) verbs ending in -e: write, drive >> writing, driving (remove -e then add -ing)
3) verbs ending in -ie: lie, die >> lying, dying (replace -ie with -y- then add -ing)
4) verbs ending in CVC, (we double the last cons.):
(1 syllable): cut, stop, plan, run, swim >> cutting, stopping, planning, running, swimming.
(2+ syllables) only when the stress is on the last syllable:
- commit > com-MIT >> committing
- admit > ad-MIT >> admitting
- forget > for-GET >> forgetting
- begin > be-GIN >> beginning
- refer > re-FER >> referring
Notice the stress on these verbs, also ending in CVC:
- open > O-pen >> opening
- visit > VI-sit >> visiting
- consider > con-SID-er >> considering
- develop > de-VEL-op >> developing

*Exceptions for CVC, because we don't double the last cons.:

w - show, grow >> showing, growing
x - fix, mix >> fixing, mixing
y - play, pray >> playing, praying
c - panic >> panic +k(not a 2nd -c-) +ing >> panicking (why? so the sound before -ing is K, not S)

In England (but not the United States) the letter -L- at the end of a word is doubled even if the
stress is not on the last syllable:
Cancel >> cancelling, for US: canceling
Travel >> travelling, for US: traveling
