CHEMICAL SYMBOLS
I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. Write chemical symbols of elements and give the name of the elements given
their symbol; and
2. Appreciate the importance of knowing the symbols and names of elements.

Activity sheets
Work sheet symbol checklist, symbol card, stones or corn grains, symbol chits
B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity: Getting Familiar with” Let’s Play SYMBO!”
a. Choose a leader from among yourselves. The others are expected to getthe
materials from the teacher and to distribute the symbol cards (1 to a
player) and the corn grains or stones (about pieces to a player). Examine
the cards. Notice that they are like Bingo cards.
b. The leader puts all the symbol chits in a box and shakes it. He picks one
chit and reads a loud the name of the elements to the players. The players
will look for the symbol of the elements called out on their symbol cards.
If it is on the card, they should place a corn grain on the symbol. The
leader puts the chit in its proper place on the symbol checklist.
e. The winner should read aloud the names of the elements covered in his
card. The leader checks them against the symbol checklist.
f. Each player who does not win should write on a piece of paper his name
and the symbols covered on his card. Then he may remove the corn grains
from his card.
g. The leader should record on a piece of paper all symbols called out during
the game. He should collect all the materials and the papers from the
players and give them to the teacher.
b. Do the same for those whose names are not similar to their symbols: Ag,
Au, Hg, Sn, Sb, W, K
C. Generalization
1. All matter in theuniverse is composed of elements.
3. The symbols for most elements consist of the first one or two letters of the
name of the element. The first letter of an element is always capitalized. Is a
second letter is used it must be lowercase.
D. Application/ Valuing
1. Chemical symbols are one way to make people from different cultures
understand the composition of matter, which is common to all.
2. Evaluation: use a modern periodic table. On the basis of the names of the
elements, list down elements, which you think, are named after each of the
following. (Have at least 3 elements in each list).
a. Place/ town/ country
b. Person
c. Mineral
d. Mythological Character
e. Planet/ heavenly body
