Time Frame 5 weeks

Competencies
C1. Demonstrate understanding of the properties of elements based on periodic atomic
properties.
C2. Appreciate the importance of knowing the properties of elements and how they are
used in technology.

CHEMICAL SYMBOLS

Time Frame 4 sessions

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. Write chemical symbols of elements and give the name of the elements given
their symbol; and
2. Appreciate the importance of knowing the symbols and names of elements.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Chemical Symbols

B. References

B. Materials
Activity sheets
Work sheet symbol checklist, symbol card, stones or corn grains, symbol chits

III. Learning Tasks

A. Recall and Motivation
1. What elements were used by our forefathers, according to history books?
2. What elements are mentioned in the bible?

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity: Getting Familiar with” Let’s Play SYMBO!”
a. Choose a leader from among yourselves. The others are expected to getthe
materials from the teacher and to distribute the symbol cards (1 to a
player) and the corn grains or stones (about pieces to a player). Examine
the cards. Notice that they are like Bingo cards.

b. The leader puts all the symbol chits in a box and shakes it. He picks one
chit and reads a loud the name of the elements to the players. The players
will look for the symbol of the elements called out on their symbol cards.
If it is on the card, they should place a corn grain on the symbol. The
leader puts the chit in its proper place on the symbol checklist.

c. The leader should repeat 2 until a player wins.

d. The player who first covers a vertical, a horizontal, or a diagonal line of

symbol wins and calls out SYMBO! See figure for the winning symbol
cards. The other player should not remove the corn grains from their cards.

e. The winner should read aloud the names of the elements covered in his
card. The leader checks them against the symbol checklist.

f. Each player who does not win should write on a piece of paper his name
and the symbols covered on his card. Then he may remove the corn grains
from his card.

g. The leader should record on a piece of paper all symbols called out during
the game. He should collect all the materials and the papers from the
players and give them to the teacher.

YOU MAY END SESSION 1 AT THIS POINT.

2. Activity: “Let’s Play SYMBO” Part 2

3. Discussion / Concept Formation

a. What is the convention in writing or giving symbols of elements?
4. Agreement:
a. List some of the common elements and discuss the origins of their names.

b. Do the same for those whose names are not similar to their symbols: Ag,
Au, Hg, Sn, Sb, W, K

c. Short drill on naming symbols or vice versa.

YOU MAY END SESSION 2 AT THIS POINT.

5. Discussion / Concept Formation

a. Discuss the agreement- What are the origins of the names of elements?
b. Let the students report their findings.

YOU MAY END SESSION 3 AT THIS POINT.

C. Generalization
1. All matter in theuniverse is composed of elements.

2. Each element is represented by a chemical symbol.

3. The symbols for most elements consist of the first one or two letters of the
name of the element. The first letter of an element is always capitalized. Is a
second letter is used it must be lowercase.

4. Chemical symbols are a shorthand way to write chemical formulas of

compounds.

D. Application/ Valuing
1. Chemical symbols are one way to make people from different cultures
understand the composition of matter, which is common to all.
2. Evaluation: use a modern periodic table. On the basis of the names of the
elements, list down elements, which you think, are named after each of the
following. (Have at least 3 elements in each list).
a. Place/ town/ country
b. Person
c. Mineral
d. Mythological Character
e. Planet/ heavenly body

E. Agreement
