CHAPTER 5 GEOMETRIC SELECTION 5.1 GEOMETRIC DESIGN NORMS The design parameters related to the metro system described
here are developed based on detailed evaluation, experience and internationally accepted practices. Various alternatives to most of these
parameters were considered, but overall the most suitable for the system were accepted. Horizontal curves are provided. 5.2 TURNOUTS
AND SCISSOR CROSSOVER It is proposed to provide the following types of votes considering maintenance and ride facility. • On main
lines of Elevated section with 4.9m track center (Double U-girder), crossovers of 1 in 9 type turnouts with lead radius of 300m and speed
potential on divergent track as 45 km/h. • On main lines of Underground section with 14.05 track center, Scissor cross-over of 1 in 9 type
turnouts with lead radius of 190m and speed potential on divergent track as 35 km/h. • On Depot lines, 1 in 7 type turnouts with a lead
radius of 190m and speed potential on divergent track as 35 km/h. Fig 5.1 1 in 9 Type Turn-Out (300m lead radius) Fig 5.2 1 in 9 Type Turn-
Out (190m lead radius) Fig 5.3 1 in 7 Type Turn-Out (190m lead radius) 5.3 ALIGNMENT CONSIDERATIONS • Flattest possible curves
have been proposed. • Tangent alignment has been maximized. • Number of curves has been minimized. • Maximum possible transition
lengths, commensurate to operating speed have been proposed. • Elevated alignment has been maximized. • Number of gradients has
been minimized. • Flattest possible vertical curve has been proposed. • Cants of appropriate values, commensurate to operating speed at
specific locations have been proposed to counter the effect of centrifugal force. • Vertical curves & Transition curves of Horizontal Alignment
do not overlap. 5.3.1 HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT A) Circular Curves Radius as large as possible will be used to improve ride quality. The
minimum radius of curvature for the mainline track is governed by the design speed and the limits for the cant, but not less than 120 meters.
Underground Section Elevated Section Desirable Minimum 300m 200m Absolute Minimum 200m 120m Min. curve radius at stations 1000m
1000mn Max. permissible cant 125mm 125mm Max. cant deficiency 100mm 100mm Table 5.1 Horizontal Curve Parameters B) Reverse
Curves The use of reverse curves is encouraged, but where necessary, both curves should be at least 25 m apart. If the 25 m straight
length supply is restricted by body restraints, it is provided without a straight line between the two curves. C) Transition Curves It is
necessary to provide transition curves so that both ends of the circular curves are evenly spaced from the straight section to the curved area
5.3.2 VERTICAL ALIGNMENT A) Elevated Section IRC: According to para 2.12.2 of SB-73, "a minimum of 5.50 m vertical clearance shall
be granted from all points of the lane of project highways to the adjacent surface of the overpass structure". However, a suitable margin is
placed to elevate the road by rebuilding the future (5.65 m per minute). The level of the rail depends on the type and detailed design of the
bear cap and super-structure components. Rail levels are proposed at elevated station locations by providing a minimum vertical clearance
of 3.50 meters and con course. The structural design of the con-course floor slabs and viaduct will also manage the final rail level.
Parameter Min. Track Centre Min. rail level above ground level Mid-Section 4m 7.5m Station w/o scissor cross over 4m 12m Station with
scissor cross over 4.5m 12m Table 5.2 Track Centre and elevated section requirement B) Underground Section Rail level is proposed in the
middle tunnels with a view to providing a minimum cover of tunnel diameter ‘D’ to the foundations of the structures above. At stations, the
depth of the train below ground level will also accommodate the station concourse. 5.3.3 Gradients A) Mid-Section The grade on the mid-
section is usually not steeper than 2.0%. B) STATIONS Stations with cross-slope and longitudinal drains with suitable arrangements for
drainage will be in priority condition. However, the maximum grade should not exceed 1 in 400. There will be no change in the grade of the
ballast less track. C) Depot For a connection to track depot, a maximum of 4% slope is recommended. 5.3.4 Vertical Curves Vertical curves
are provided when the slope change exceeds 0.4%. However, it is recommended that all changes in quality be combined with a circular
curve or a parabolic curve. It is ensured that the vertical curves and transition curves of the horizontal alignment do not overlap. The
minimum radius and length of the vertical curves are given in Table 5.3. Parameter Vertical Curve Desirable Radius on main line 2500m
Absoute Minimum Radius on main line 1500m Minimum Length of vertical curve 20m Table 5.3 Vertical Curve Parameters 5.4 DESIGN
SPEED The maximum section speed is 80 km / h. However, as determined by alignment, vertical profile and simulation studies of station
locations, the application cane and the length of the shift relative to the normal speed at different locations will be determined. . The radius
parameters of the horizontal curve, the angle and the allowable speed are summarized in Table 5.4.
