Case Study on Learning, Perception, and Attribution

Ms. Gloria Tadino was mildly surprised when she found 50 resumes on top of her desk.
The resumes are attachments for a single job opening that was advertised in a newspaper a few
days ago. The vacant position is for an encoder.
Gloria, still single, was hired by the company and is currently the recruitment supervisor
in the human resources department. The resumes of applicants on her desk indicate her most
recent assignment. She was ordered to analyze them and prepare a shortlist of ten names who
will be interviewed by the committee headed by the manager of the human resources department.
Gloria took a good look at the requirements for the vacant position which consist of the
following: 21-26 years old, graduate of BSIT, and a resident of Tuguegarao City.
Gloria found out that 30 of the applicants did not meet the requirements, so their
application were set aside. Still, Gloria needs to eliminate 10 more. She was in a quandary and
she could not make up her mind on who would be eliminated.
As Gloria was shuffling the resumes, she noticed one with a similar name to her ex-
boyfriend’s. She said to herself “I don’t want to work with someone who has this name”, and she
took out the resume and set it aside. She has nine more names to go.
Next, she noticed five applicants graduated from the university where his boyfriend in an
alumnus. She set aside the five resumes. With the last four, she agonized in trying to find a
reason for weeding them out. Nevertheless, she found the answer. Four of the applicants were
graduates of college located in the provinces. In no time, her list of ten names is complete.
QUESTIONS
1. Is there anything wrong with the manner the shortlist was prepared by Gloria? Elaborate your
answer. (10pts)
Yes. There is. First, set aside emotional differences when it comes to work. We should not put into it any
emotional affection just like in the story. It is not good that if the applicant's name is just like your ex
boyfriend name, then you will not check it properly. Second, set aside academic preferences instead be
professional in checking and analyzing those resume. Not all people is like your ex, and even though the
applicants and your ex has came from one institution, it is not a good basis just to set aside them and
get other.
2. What can you suggest regarding the preparation of shortlist to Gloria? (10pts)
In times of uncertainty, we should always act professionally. Dont let your emotions affect your work. It
is not a reasonable thing to do that you will discourse the applicant even if they have the same name
and came from one institution with your ex. Know your ethics of work.
