question 1

1. A stepped bar ABCD , 900mm long , is subjected to various loads of 12kN , 3kN ,9kN and 6kN as shown
in the gure 1.Diameters of AB,BC,CD are 20mm ,16mm , 12 mm respectively. The axial lengths are
AB = 200mm, BC = 300mm and CD = 400mm respectively . If the bar is made of steel , What is
total change in length take E = 200Gpa. [CO1]
2. A stepped copper bar 600mm long carries axial forces as shown in gure 2. Diameters for
AB = 20mm, BC = 20mm and CD = 16mm , lengths are AB = 150mm, BC = 150mm and
CD = 300m. If P1=8 kN,P2 = 4 kN , P3 = 8 kN, P4 =4 KN as shown. E for copper = 105GPa , what
is the change in the length of the bar. [CO1]
3. Two wires one of steel and other of copper are attached to a rigid bar .Upper ends of wires are xed in
Ceiling .Length of steel wire is 4m and diameter of steel wire is 2mm. length of copper wire is 3m and
the diameter is 2mm. Es = 2 × ECu = 210kN/mm2 .Distance between two wires is 100mm. A load of
600N is applied on rigid bar at point C. Determine distance `a' so that rigid bar remains horizontal
after the application of the load , by how much distance rigid bar moves downward. [CO1]

A1. For BC = L/3,area is A2.Area A2 = 1.5A1.Two equal and opposite forces P each are applied at
sections B C. As shown in the gure 4.If P = 16kN, A1 = 100mm2 What are the stresses developed in
the sections AB ,BCCD of the bar. [CO1]

the ratio of areas of cross-section of steel and aluminum if the slab is to remain horizontal. [CO1]

6. A rigid beam 2m long , hinged at end A is supported by two wire hangers at B and D as shown in
gure 6.A load of 1 kN acts at C . Both the wires are of copper and diameter of wires is 4mm.If
E = 200GP a for steel, Determine stresses in wire at B and D. [CO1]

ˆ Maximum load =44.8 kN
ˆ Load at fracture =37 kN
ˆ Diameter at neck =9.1 mm
