Voltage across Field Winding
DISCUSSION: This experiment was done to see speed control ability of a DC shunt motor. The armature
and the field winding is connected parallel to each other. At first the voltage across the field winding is
kept constant and armature current is varied. As a result as seen in the graph the RPM of the motor
increases. Later the armature current is kept constant and field winding voltage is varied. We can see from
the graph that the RPM also increases this time too.
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the working principle of a DC motor?
Ans: A DC motor works by the principle of Fleming’s left hand rule. When a current
carrying wire is placed inside an permanent or electromagnet it experiences torque which
helps it to rotate. Inside a DC motor armature of several loops are placed in a yoke
surrounded by poles of field windings which acts as a electromagnet. When current is
supplied the armature starts rotating.
