EUROPE IN THE POSTWAR PERIOD

After the end of the second world war on 8 May 1945, the main objective of the allies and axis was
to rebuild their cities. They began by demolishing old buildings in ruins, they evacuated debris with
the help of animals and small railways. In Germany, although there was hunger, schools opened
amid ruins, recycled objects of war and bricks to rebuild. Eventually the Germans became
accustomed to living in ruins. There were more than one million orphaned children in Europe,
however, in Germany began a program to help the children find their families. In France, women
obtained the right to vote, the monarchy was abolished at the same time was created the Soviet
Union with Stalin at the helm, after that, Eastern European countries began to expel millions of
Germans staying there, and lynched and murdered thousands of them. They were forced to use a
distinctive, in Poland they were forced to remain in concentration camps for Jews in
Czechoslovakia, they chased small groups of Germans to kill them, as if all morality had
disappeared. German prisoners of war broke out, in Russia they were subjected to death amid the
climate. Then, USA realizes the threat of the Soviet Union, European countries suffer from hunger
and poor economy, so that USA decided to send humanitarian aid to help Europe, helped
Germany to make it stronger, since it would serve as a barrier against the spread of
communism. Years later Germany becomes a democratic country as we know it now and start the
cold war between capitalism and socialism.
