Title: Broiler production at Annandale Secondary School

Aim: To investigate and compare the growth rate of Chickens using starter rations
and starter rations with broken rice.

Introduction
Statement of problem: The researcher noticed that commercial rations are
expensive around the market and as such, as a student of Annandale Secondary
she will like to determine which starter rations will be best for the chickens.

Objectives

 To observe the growth rate of the birds

 To observe the weight of the birds using the different ration
 To observe which group of birds eat less

Methodology
Experimental Design

In this experiment an investigation was carried out to determine which starter

ration was best for the chickens. Two carols was set up which was provided with
clean fresh litter, one feeder tray, waterers , starters ,water and medication .
Poultry litter consists of bedding materials (Shaving), manure, feather and other
component. Dry litters are important for the health and welfare of birds. Poultry
feed is a food for chickens and other domestic birds. It is important because it
provides nutrients for the birds and helps in the growth of birds. The researcher
plan to use starter rations and starter rations with broken rice for this
experiment. Thirty birds was place in one carol and the bird was cared for a
period of 14 days and was provided with the same quantity of feed and water.
Feeders was utilize to the height of the back of the birds. Light was even proven
to warm the birds. At the end of 14 days period, 15 birds were separated into
another carol which was provided with starter ration with broken rice and water.
Both set of birds was given water and feed regularly. Some of the birds were
attacked and mechanism was place to prevent further attacked. I plan to collect
information by regular visit to the pen, using camera to take out photographs
and by recording information on a table. At the end of the period information
will be interpreted using table, graphs, and chart along with a discussion.

Tools and Materials

 Water
 Brooder
 Baby Broilers
 Waterers
 Feeders
 Starters
 Broken Rice
 Bulb
 Soap Powder
 Disinfectant

Preparation

1. The pen was been cobweb and the vines was removed
2. The poultry pen was swept, cleaned and disinfect
3. The foot bath was set up ,cleaned and disinfect
4. It was ensured that the pen was free of flies
5. The brooder was set up 48 hours before the chicks arrived
6. Wood shaving was place on the floor of the brooders to a thickness of 4-6cm
7. An infrared bulb with a hoover was suspended to the ceiling in the middle of the
brooder with a temperature of 32 degree Celsius
8. Feeders and waterers was set up for the baby chicks
9. The birds arrived
10. The bird was fed
11. Antibiotic was given to the chicken
12. The light was turn on
13. The birds was fed on a daily basic
14. The litter was changed
15. The birds was separated into separate carol
16. The birds was weigh on a weekly basic to
17. The birds was slaughtered
18. The birds was dressed
19. The birds was degutted
20. The carcass was packaged and weighed
21. The birds was marketed
22. The pen was cleaned to get rid of diseases

Cleaning and disinfecting of pen is use to kill bacteria and other small living things that
causes disease. The pen was clean 3 times per week. Jeyes fluid was place in the foot
bath to eliminate organism. A brooder is a heated structure use for raising baby chicks.
The brooder was set up to keep the baby chick’s safe and to supply warmth. The wood
shaving was used to reduce the ammonia in the air that comes out of the poultry. An
infrared bulb was use to provide a source of comfort as well as warmth .The heat from
the bulb help to warm the bodies of the chicks. Antibiotic was given to the chicken to
prevent infection, treat infection and also help in promotion of growth and
improvement in production in farm animals. The wood shaving was changed
