Types and Parts of the Computer

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

The word computer is derived from the English word "compute" which means to calculate.
So, in simple words computer is an electronic device which is used for fast calculations. Furthermore, a
computer is a programmable electronic device which is designed to accept data, perform prescribed
mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display the results of such operations.

When we hear the word computer we often think of a personal computer like desktop or laptop.
However, computer comes in various types and they perform many different functions in our daily lives.
Like when you are using an oven to reheat your food, using calculator or texting your friend using your
phone. And those are some of different types of computers.

On the other hands, Personal Computers are also of various types which are designed to perform
their different tasks and functions and below are the following:

• DESKTOP COMPUTER is a type of personal computer that is meant to stay at one location. It
has a monitor or another display, keyboard, mouse and either a horizontal or vertical tower or system
unit.
• LAPTOP is battery or AC-powered personal computer that are portable than desktop computers,
allowing you to use them anytime and anywhere.
• SERVER is a computer device or a program that is dedicated for managing network resources.
Servers are often referred to as dedicated because they usually carry out hardly any other tasks apart
from their servers.
• TABLET COMPUTERS are computers intermediate in size between laptop and smartphones.
Early tablet computer uses either a keyboard or a stylus to input information, but these methods
were subsequently displaced by touchscreens.
• MOBILE PHONES also known as cellular phone or simply cell phone is a wireless handheld
device that allows the users to make and receive calls and to send text messages. The earliest
generation of mobile phones could only make and receive calls. Today’s mobile phones, however,
games, cameras, video players and even navigational system.
• GAME CONSOLE is a specialized kind of computer design for playing video games. Although
they are not as fully-featured as desktop computer many latest consoles allow user to access non-
gaming tasks like browsing the internet.

Personal computers like desktop are composed of different parts such as System Unit, Monitor,
Keyboard, Mouse, Speaker, Modem, Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Hard Disk Drive, Power Supply, Graphic
Card and Input/Output Ports. Each part plays an important role whenever you use a computer.
• Monitor is often used synonymously with "computer screen" or "display." It an output
device that displays information in pictorial form. The monitor displays the computer's user
interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact with the computer, typically using
the keyboard and mouse.

• Modem is short for "Modulator-Demodulator." is a hardware device that converts data from
a digital format, intended for communication directly between devices with specialized
wiring. It allows a computer or another device, such as a router or switch, to connect to the
Internet.

• System Unit is also known as a "tower" or "chassis," is the enclosure that contains most of
the components of a personal computer. Cases are usually constructed from steel, aluminum
and plastic and it is the main part of a desktop computer. It includes the motherboard, CPU,
RAM, and other components. It also includes the case that houses the internal components
of the computer.

• A computer mouse is a hand-held pointing device that controls a cursor in a GUI and can
move and select text, icons, files, and folders. For desktop computers, the mouse is placed
on a flat surface such as a mouse pad or a desk and is placed in front of your computer.

• A computer speaker is an output hardware device that connects to a computer to generate

sounds. The signal used to produce the sound that comes from a computer speaker is created
by the computer's sound card.

• A printer is a peripheral device or a machine which makes a persistent representation of

graphics or text, usually on paper.

• A computer keyboard is a typewriter-style device composed of finger-sized buttons called

keys to enter or manipulate data on a computer or other device.
