Lesson The System Unit and Keyboard

1  Identify the uses of system unit and keyboard; and


 enumerate the parts of system unit and keyboard.

The system unit acts as the brain of the computer. It controls all the
processing and operations of the computer system.
Front Panel and Buttons of System Unit

The keyboard is a device for entering information into a computer. The


standard layout of letters, numbers, and punctuations is known as QWERTY
keyboard.
Four Basic Parts of a Keyboard

m Spacebar – can make spaces
m Enter – lets you move down to the next line
m Backspace – erases the character on the left of the cursor
m Del/Delete – erases the character that the cursor is on
m Ctrl/Control and Alt – pressed at the same time with another key
m Esc/Escape – used to close most programs
m Caps Lock – used to make all letters big

Other Computer Parts


 CD-ROM - Compact Disk-Read Only Memory, is a high capacity storage
device which lets you read data from the disk.
 Trackball - resembles a mouse and is guided by fingers.
 Joystick - for computer games. It is used to move an indicator on a
monitor screen.
 Modem - modulator-demodulator, a device that connects a computer to a
telephone line.
 Speaker - connected to a computer and generate sounds.
 Microphone - attached to a computer. Allows you to input sounds like
speech into the computer.
 Printer - prints text and graphics on paper.

Three (3) Kinds of Printer:


1. Dot-matrix Printer - uses tiny dot to form an image on paper. Prints
slowly and makes loud sounds.
2. Inkjet Printer - uses ink to print image on paper. It prints faster and
more quietly than a dot-matrix.
3. Laser Printer – the most expensive printer, uses laser and powdered
ink to print. Prints fastest and makes the best printout.

Hardcopy – the output printed on paper.

Name what printer is being asked. Write DM if it is a dot-matrix, IJ if it is an inkjet,


and LP for laser printer. Write your answer in your notebook. (Deadline: Saturday)

Proper Care of the Computer


1. Always clean your computer and its surroundings. You can use a clean rag
or a rag with an ordinary alcohol.
2. Cover your computer with a piece of cloth when not in use to protect it
from dust and dirt.
3. Avoid eating near the computer.
4. Do not place heavy objects on your computer.
5. Avoid exposing your computer to too much heat or sunlight.

Things that May Harm the Computer

What is a Window?
A window is a rectangular, on-screen frame where you can see the
drawings you made, the things you have typed, and games you want to play.

This is the first thing that appears on the screen once the computer
power is turned on. The working area of windows.

In using Windows 7, performance is at an all-time high and more


programs are now available for use and run faster than ever.

a. Start button – This contains the list of all the computer programs.
b. Icons – These are the small pictures or thumbnail pictures that
represent the programs installed on your computer.
c. Taskbar – This is the gray/light blue bar located at the bottom of the
screen. It is where the start button is located.
d. Wallpaper – This is a digital image used as background.
e. Notification Area – This is a portion of the taskbar that provides
temporary source for notifications and status.

programs that run a computer.

Recycle Bin
Recycle bin is the temporary storage for deleted
files.

Internet Explorer
This icon launches the internet explorer
browser.

Network Places
This displays the other computer in the network
connected to your computer.
